Entertainment UT Play Heads Event Schedule By LINDA BROWN Entertainment Editor The irony of this week’s enter tainment situation is that the term has only eight more weeks, hut those who schedule entertain ment events have planned twice as many things to do and see as there were during fall term. EUGENE O’NEILL'S “Touch of Poet” opens at 8 p m. today in the University Theatre. Tickets cost $1.25 and may be reserved by contacting the box office. The play concerns hself with the strained relationships between a disgraced British officer who tries to give the impression that he is an aristocrat—and his daughter who despises him for his illus ions. The play will run tonight and Saturday and Jan. 23 to 26. Tonight is the last night for the North Eugene production of “The Crucible”, written by Arthur Miller. The play concerns itself with the Salem witch-hunts and was once thought to be a thinly disguised attack on the late Sen ator McCarthy. Curtain time is 8 p.m.; ticket prices, $1.25. At 8 p.m. there is a wrestling match with Washington State University in Mac Court. Tomor row night at 9 the SU is spon soring its first night club—Club Erb. There will be dancing, a floor show and refreshments. There is a SU ski trip Sunday to Hoodoo bowl, and a faculty concert will be given at 8 p.m. today in the School of Music auditorium. SUNDAY, THE film society is showing Ingmar Bergman's “Smiles of a Summer Night", a sophisticated comedy about an octet of lovers playing a game that ladies always win. The film was made in 1957 and stars Eva Dahlbeck, Harriet Anderson and Gunnar Bjornstand. SU movie for the week is “The Young Lions", which is loosely adapted from Irwin Shaw’s novel of the same name. The book was supposed to show how a good German could be transformed into a cruel animal through the mechanism of the Nazi party. The movie talks about a neithez-bad nor-good German who goes all the way through the war before he discovers what’s really going on. It stars Marion Brando, Mont gomery Clift and Dean Martin with Barbara Rush, Hope Lange and May Britt. If you’re observ ant enough you can also eaten a glimpse of Maxmillian Schnell. THE MOST notable movie this week is the saga of that well known stripper, the renowned Gypsy Rose Lee. “Gypsy”, show ing at the Fox, stars Natalie Wood, Karl Malden and Rosaline Russell. Miss Russell has received raves, some even suggesting an cscar nomination. Miss Wood is good but there is just barely enough of her to fill the costumes. Campus Briefs • An achievement test for elementary education majors will be given from 9 a.m. until noon Saturday in 127 Education. The test must be taken prior to .student teach ing. Juniors and ,-eniors in elementary edu cation are especially urged to take it. • Phi Theta members who want to usher or the Peter, Paul and Mary concert are asked to call Kim Bunton, Ext. 1451. • Cars will leave for the YWCA tour of the Skip worth Home at 3 :3 0 and 4 p.m. today. • Mu Phi Epsilon, music sorority, will hold initiation ceremonies Sunday at 2 p.m. in Gerlinger Hall. • Math majors initiated into Pi Mu Ep silon last spring may pick up certificates of membership in 108 Deady Hall. Petitions • The Student Union Board is calling for petitions for chairman of the Creative Arts committee. Petitions may be picked up on the third floor of the SU and are due at 5 p.m. Wednesday. • YWCA petitions for offices must be turned in by noon today. • WRA petitions are due at 5 p.m. to day in the president’s box in the Gerlin ger locker room. • Angel Flight is calling for petitions for new members. Petitions may be picked up from the third floor of the SU and mu^t be returned by 5 p.m. today. Freshmen and sophomores with a 2.3 CPA are eligible. The music’s good and the whole thing should be a rip-rouser. The McDonald is showing "Bar abbas", the story of the thief who was oT<>red by Pilate to the people of Jerusalem in place of Jesus. Althougn the script is by playwright Christopher Fry and Par Lagerkvist (Nobel prize win ner). reviews of the movies haven’t been that favorable. One advantage of the movie, though, is its star, Anthony Quinn. “Cash on Demand’’ is the co feature. THE MAYFLOWER is holding over that movie, which was based on the book, which was based on someone's wild conception of Suburbia and sex, "The Chapman Report." The cast is good—Shelly Winters, Clair Bloome, Jane Fon da, Glynis Johns—but the movie is one that should never have been made. Unless to give em ployment. The Heilig is having an All Elvis night with "Blue Hawaii” and “Jailhouse Rock.” The Eu gene Drive-in is having an All American night with “Splendor in the Grass (with Natalie Wood and Warren Beatty) and "Par rish” (with Troy Donahue and the usual cast of parents with problems and teen-agers with problems.
