0 EMERALD SPORTS Webfoot Wrestlers Seek Third Win By JIM WILLIAMS Emerald Sports Writer It'll be mat action galore Friday night when Coach Mike Reuter sends his Duck grapplers into action against the Washington State Cougars in Mac Court at 8 p.m. Saturday night the Ducks travel to Reedsport where they will face the undefeated Brigham Young wrestlers. In preliminary action. Coach Cec Eaves puts his Frosh grapplers on the mats against the Oregon State Rooks. In their last outing the Frosh picked up a 19-6 win over Clark JC. a school the Oregon Freshmen have never before beaten. Dave White at 130 pounds and Doug Muck at 157 have 7 0 and 3-0 records respectively. Heavyweight Rick Burns has suffered but one loss this season, that a 5-4 decis ion to Rich Bell. Pacific Coast Champion from Washington. Burns suffered an ankle injury in the bout with Bell last week and is a doubtful starter this weekend. Should Burns be ready for action by Saturday night, he will go in the 191-pound spot with Terry O'Sullivan taking over the heavyweight position. In previous action this year the Ducks have tied for first in the University of Washington Invita tional Tournament, whipped Cen tral Washington 15-13, lost to the Washington Huskies by a 15-9 count and last Saturday beat Western Washington 23-8 at Bel lingham. After tonight's contest with the Cougars, the Ducks have but two home meets left on the schedule. The next home affair is on Jan. 26 when they meet Southern Ore gon College and the home finale comes nearly a month later when Multnomah Athletic Club of Port land invades Mac Court. The meet with the Multnomah Athletic Club also winds up the dual meet season for the Ducks as they enter the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Championships the next weekend. Friday night’s starting lineup consists of 123-pounder Dennis Radford; Dave White at 130 pounds; Monrad Bjorge at 137; Charlie Warren in the 147-pound slot; Doug Muck at 157 pounds; either Glenn Brisbine or John Folo at 167 pounds; Bob Keeney at 177 pounds; and either Terry O'Sullivan or Rick Burns at the heavyweight position. Frosh in Quesi Of Fifth in Row By JANET O’DELL Emerald Sports Writer Oregon’s frosh basketball squad will be looking for its fifth and sixth consecutive wins this week end when it travels to meet in dependent teams from Corvallis and Portland. Tonight the Frosh face Truax Oil of Corvallis at Camp Adair, and clash with Claudia’s of Port land in a benefit game at Milwau kie high school Saturday. The Traux Oil squad is made up of former Oregon State cagers, while Oregon grads play for Claudia's. Coach Don Kirsch will be with out the services of Hick Potter, one of his top three guards, who is out with a knee injury. Replac ing him will be Dave Kafoury who, along with starting forward John Franz, paced the team to a 91-81 victory over Priestly Oil of Portland last weekend by scoring 20 and 21 points respectively. Also topping the Ducklings is guard Jim Barnett, who boasts a 23 points per game average. Rounding out the lineup are 6-5 forward Bill Jennings and 6-8 center Gene Brockmeyer. Kirsch expects “two tough ball games” this weekend, since both teams have good players with experience. He added that Oregon will be “hurting without Potter” who is expected to return to action. 4-7 vs. 1-9 Ducks Hope to Improve Record In Cougar Clash Bv BOB HERNDON Emerald Sports Writer Oregon’s Webfoots go on the road this weekend for a pair with Washington State in Pull man. The contests will put two of the worst Northwest records on tiie line. The series marks the half way point in the current Webfoot bas ketball campaign Thus far in the win-loss column the Ducks have posted a dismal 4-7 record The Cougar squad is in the midst of one of their worst seasons in many years. The WSU five lias managed only one win in ten starts. In one previous encounter this year, the Webfoots managed their only win of the Far West Classic at the expense of the Cougars. The Ducks downed the Washing ton Staters 67-57 in the quarter finals before absorbing losses to California and Io%va On the new year, the Ducks are 1-2, the last time tiie Webfoots saw the light of victory was against the hapless Pilots from the University of Portland In their last two games, the Ducks w'ere both hoi and told. Last Fri day they played Idaho to a stand off in regulation tune, but blew several golden opportunities in both regulation play and overtime and came out on the short end of the score. The followin'.; night fans poured into Mac Court expecting a re peat of Friday night’s perform ance. Instead the crowd watched in horror as the Duck cagers couldn’t seem to do anything right The Vandals tied the Ducks in knots and romped to an easy 81-58 win. The Webfoots threw the ball away, nlayed no defense and were spasmodic in their shooting The entire team seemed to be anemic; they showed no (ire i or hustle whatsoever. The Webfoots are still looking for a backcourt combination that will make the Duck offense click Probable starter at guard for Ore gon will be 6-2 sophomore Elliott Gleason Either Bob Yates, John Mack or Pat Loy are possible choices for the other backcourt spot. On the other hand, the Cougars boast two fine backcourt men in Byron Vadset and Jim Walton. Both are dangerous outside shoot ers and lead the Washington State team in scoring. Vadset came through with a 31 point produc tion in the sole Cougar victory against Montana State. The Ducks will be set to go with their veterans under the boards.
