Gridders Leave; Opener Nears Oregon’s football Ducks 1 e 11 the Eugene airport Thursday morning for a six-hour flight to Austin. Texas and the Saturday evening grid battle with the mighty University of Texas Long horns. The Ducks left two warriors be hind, center Ron Stratten and veteran quarterback Doug Post. Stratten was injured in Spring practice and Post sustained an in jury in pre-season scrimmage when he dived for a fumble. WITH POST out it will be Bob Berry, a sophomore, getting the starting nod at QB. Other back field starters w'ill be Mel Renfro and left half, Larry Hill at right half, and Jim Josephson at full back. Starting in the line at ends will be Dick lmwalle and Greg Wil lener. At tackles will be Steve Barnett and Ron Snidow: in the guard slots will be Ed Thomas and Mickey Ording; and at center will be Rick Dixon. All but Berry are lettermen and only Berry, lmwalle. Thomas and Hill were regulars on last year’s squad. THE DUCKS took a brief work out in Austin Thursday evening to get their first test of grid bat tle under the lights and will have another drill Friday night in prep aration for the rugged season opener. Coach Len Casanova, when speaking of the coming battle, re lated that the Ducks were facing double jeopardy. “First we have to consider Texas's power and speed on the field. Then we have to think of.the weather.” The weather in Texas has been very warm and it is thought that it may have some effect on the Ducks, who are not used to un usually warm temperatures. The game is scheduled for 7:30 in Texas, 5:30 Eugene time. Oregon players making the trip are: lmwalle, Willener, Paul Bur leson, Buck Corey, Rick Schwab. MICKEY ORDING STEVE BARNETT ... set for Texas Tankers Conference Favorites The University of Oregon swim team is favored to finish first; in the Far West Conference, Coach Don Van Rossen said in an interview Thursday. The confer ence is composed of Washington, Washington State, University of Idaho. Oregon State and Oregon The team, which won eight of nine dual meets before losing to University of Washington, in the championships, is an experienced one. The squad, with the excep tion of seven lcttermen, will be returning. The lettermen will be adequate ly replaced by members of last years Freshman squad. “Last sea son’s Frosh team was the strong est one in the University's his tory,” Van Rossen said. "In seven meets they lost only once, and that was to the Varsity.” One of the standouts on the Frosh team last year was Hick Royd Boyd holds five University of Oregon Frosh records and is co-holder of another. He was leading scorer on the Frosh squad, and Coach Van Rossen hopes he will he one of the top scorers for the Varsity this year. He was All American in the 220 yard and 440 yard free style events. He also set the national Junior College rec ord in the 440 yard with c tinv» of 3;57.3. The time surpassed Die oldest re maining record at the University. Jim Hurd set the old time of 23 seconds flat in 1937.
