-Says Bowerman Concerning Jerome’s 6.2 Clocking I Don’t Like to Question the Timers, But • • • 1 By DICK EEl'TZINGER Emerald Sports Writer “If he can't take it. he should not dish it out!" At least, that's what track coach Bill Bowerman has to say about Dyi-ol Burleson’s surprising defeat by ex-Oregon middle distance runner Jim Grelle at the Oregon Invitational indoor meet in Portland Saturday night. Bowerman wasn't inferring that Burly took his defeat badly. The Webfoot track mentor told a capacity crowd at a noon meet ing of the Oregon Club, “he's been beaten before and it hasn't hurt him. Neither will this." And what did Grelle, now a soap salesman in Los Angeles, have to say about the race? “I'm so happy I don't care if I run another race indoors this sea son.’’ he said. BOWERMAN asked him if he thought before the race he was going: to win. “I was planning on winning," said Grelle bluntly, but with a grin across his slender face. “I've been working for this race ever since September, when I started with Igloi t Mihaly, his coach at the Los Angeles Track Club)." He added that he thought the race would be faster, "but I wasn't going in front I was interesting in winning, not in time." Bowerman hinted that his sprinter. Harry Jerome, might have run a faster 60 yard dash than he was credited with run ning—maybe even as fast as 5.9 seconds, which would have been a world record. "I DON'T L.IKK to question the timers.” he said, "but the tele vision people had him in 5.9. I had him in 5.9. and the timers had a 6.2 (the same as Jerome's time) for the man who was sec ond. five or six feet back, and a 0.2 for the next man too. According to wrestling coach Mike Reuter. Oregon may have JIM GKELLK . . . SpeatliH the best heavyweight wrestler on the West Coast. The Ducks meet Oregon State, fourth place finisher in the 19fil NCAA, at McArthur Court Sat urday night. "We have a chance to beat them,” said Keuter. “No matter who wins, it will be close. Don Van Rossen, whose swim team posted a pair of victories over the weekend, one an upset first-in-memory win over Wash ington, emphasized how im portant strategy was in the win.
