r Tin' varsity football tram plays the uluninl today. And iimonj;' the alums are five play ers pictured on this page. On the top row, left to i lKht, quar terback Dave Grosz, end I.rn Burnett, tackle Riley Mattson, and halfback Dave Grayson. Below is Alumni coach Norm Van Brocklln. Van Brocklln Is also expected to see some ac tion at quarterback. Varsity... The Varsity is experience- at several positions, and has a fair amount of depth. But there isn’t an experienced quarterback on the squad—and this may hurt coach Len Casanova’s attack. TODAY’S starter is sophomore Bob Berry, who did a fine job on the Frosh squad in 1960, but hasn’t played against anywhere near the competition he'll run up against this afternoon. His replacements, Doug Post, Ron Veres, and Pat Morton, are also strangers to Varsity compe tition. SO IF THE Webfoots have an early-season weakness, it appears to be at quarterback. Every oth er position is stocked with vet erans. Ends Kent Petersen and Greg Willener are letterman. So are tackles Steve Barnett and Dennis Prozinski. So are guards Mickey Ording and Mike Rose. So is cen ter Joe Clesceri. So are halfbacks Ben Brown and Mickey Bruce. And so is fullback Bruce Snyder. AND SEVERAL of their re placements are lettermen. But there isn’t a single veter an at quarterback. If Berry or one of the other youngsters can come through this early in the year, the Var sity stands an excellent chance of avenging last year’s 13-12 de feat,. IF NOT—look out! His ALIMNI squad will be] handicapped hy lack of practicor and many of the players won't he able to compete for very lonjf against t h e better-conditioned Varsity but don't count them out. At quarterback, Van Brocklin can call on several ex-Webfoofr stars besides himself. Foremost among them are last year's t<-anf leader, Dave Grosz, and the stxtr of the 1938 Rose Bowl game, Juck Crabtree. THE REST of the backfield In cludes such names us Dave Gray; son, Cleveland Jones, Dave Pow ell, and Oregon's all-time leading ground gainer, Jim Sbanley. The ling has three big tackles who could probably make any college first team in the nation if they were still eligible. They are John Wilcox, Darrell Aschbacher, and Riley Mattson. CENTER Bob Peterson watf highly regarded In his undergrad uate days, and so were ends Al den Kimbrough and Greg Alton hofen. The list goes on and on. Trtie complete Alumni roster appears’ directly under this column. You can see for yourself, if your mem ory isn’t too short, that here, in-; deed, is a lineup of all-stars one which the Varsity won't man-, handle.
