    Peterson Faces OSU Today
As Ducks Start ND Season
Don Kirsch takes his Oregon
baseball team to Corvallis for an
afternoon game with Oregon
State, weather permitting. Denny
Peterson (4-0i, the 5’7 right
hander, will start for the Ducks.
Both teams open the Northern
Division season with this contest.
The two teams will play again
Saturday at Howe Field.
OREOON STATE comes into
the game with a 13-6 record as
against 13-4 for the Webfoots.
The Beavers suffered through a
wretched trip to California which
saw them lose five straight
gjur.es -the last three by one
run each.
Since then, the Staters have
come back impressively, winning
13 out of 14 games against North
west competition.
BIG LEON CRIXER will open j
for Ralph Coleman's Beavers to- j
day. Criner, a fastball artist, has
Struck out 43 men in 32 innings
while compiling a 3-1 mark. Cole
man will probably save Bill Oerd
ing, the leading pitcher in the
Northern Division last year, for
Saturday’s Howe Field game.
All-America leftfielder Larry
Petersen is only the third highest j
Beaver in the batting averages
with a .382 mark. But his 21
RBI’s, best on Oregon State,
show that he's probably then
most dangerous hitter. Outfielder
Grimm Mason, at .397, and sopho
more firstbaseman Harry Demor
est, at .393, are the two leading
hitters on OSC’s club.
FRED BALLARD (3-1) w ill be

Coach Dick Williams’ varsity \
tennis squad faces a pair of tough ;
opponents this weekend in its
last home matches until May 11. j
The Ducks take on highly rated j
Portland University this after-'
noon at 3:30 and then meet1
powerful Washington tomorrow
morning at 10:30 on the Univer
sity court s.
Washington has not lost a
match to an ex-Northern Division
team since 1937 but must not
take the undefeated Oregon net
ters lightly. The Ducks have de
feated all five foes they've met
this season.
Larry Brooks, Charlie Vaughn.
Jim Knight, Don Semon, Ed Rob
inson and John Cavanagh will all
see action against both Portland
and Washington.
