Frosh Win Two For 11-3 Record The Oregon Frosh fought out a tough 78-75 victory over Porter Truckers Saturday night to run their home-court winning streak to 11 game* and their total rec ord to 11-3. Steve JoneH led the scoring with 30 points on Jump shots from around the key. The Truckers from McMinn ville also had a big scorer and a real team leader In Don Porter, a 0-5 center who paced the Por ter team with 27. Jack Hiley, a 5-8 guard who shot deadly left handed Jumpers, was another ef fective competitor against the Frosh, while scoring 17 points. 'IHK FROSH scoring wavered throughout the contest as the lead changed hands several times, but with clutch shooting by Oregon's 6-4 forwards the Frosh were able to keep their home-court record unmarred. Jones was especially effective when the Frosh needed two. but Jerry Anderson and Jim Johnson also scored well by adding 11 and 10 points respectively. These three forwards had to stand up to rough backboard play used by the older men, but it was these huskier men that tired first. Having only eight players, they were also discouraged by the loss of a starter on fouls. THE HAM-TIME score had the freshmen leading 48-41. Jay Brack sparked the rally near the end of the game that guve the Frosh a lead that was threatened with 30 seconds left. Brack swished three quick jump shots to help the rally and bring his scoring total to 11. Porters' late rally which pulled them within three points with 30 seconds on the clock was stymied by replacing the starting for wards who had done so well all evening. FHOSH VS. IIAMMONIJ Bl ALDERS Friday night a well-balanced scoring attack by Coach Chuck flask's Frosh was enough to whip Roscoe Cook Wins Again Roscoe Cook continued to dom inate indoor sprinting in the West as he won the 00-yard dash in the Los Angeles Times Games Satur day night. David James of the U. S. Army finished second to the stubby University of Oregon run ner. Both were timed in 6.1. Herb Carper, who, along with Cook, holds the world's record for the event, did not even qualify for the finals. Jamaica's George Kerr picked up a victory in the 600-yard run. Mai Spence of South Africa and Yale’s Jim Stack finished second and third. Oregon's Jerry Tarr finished third in the 60-yard high hurdles. Tarr's time of 7.4 was .1 slower than winner Hayes Jones'. Brian Polkinghorne of USC finished second in the event. Sanders Gets Tie PHOENIX, Arizona (UPI) — Doug Sanders fired a record breaking round of 62 today to tie Arnold Palmer for the champion ship in the $30,000 Phoenix Open Golf Tourney. Both golfers finished with 10 under par 270’s. They will meet in an 18-hole playoff tomorrow. Palmer started out the day with an eight stroke lead over Sanders but had to sink an eight-foot birdie putt on the last hole to gain the tie. Fourteen members of the fresh man squad made the scoring fig ures. DAVE KINION, an ex-OSC Rook hoopster, won high scoring honors with 21 points. Jerry An derson and Steve Jones paced the Frosh with 15 and 14 points res pectively. Both these Hammond Builders and the Porter Trucker* had vet eran basketball enthusiasts who have been recognized as varsity college competitors. Don Porter and Jack Riley of the Trackers are both former stars for Lan field College. Ron Critchfield, w'ho scored 10 for Hammond, was once a varsity player for Oregon State. Theta Chi piled up 16 points in the second half to gain an easy victory over Phi Delta Theta by a score of 30-22. Jack Holt paced the Theta Chi’s with nine points, but Fred Flet cher took the points honors for the game and the losers with 10. Half time score stood at 14-12 and the Theta Chi's had to rely on a second half rally to take the win. Gary Swatzel led the Kappa Sigma team to victory over the Chi Psi squad as he compiled nine points in his effort toward the 26-25 victory. The Chi Psi's found themselves at a disadvantage at the half time rest, 14-8, and came back with a tremendous drive and scoring effort but still fell short of victory by a one point margin. Dan Ennes was high for the game and Chi Psi with 12 point ers. In the final game of the day Sheldon romped over Omega to remain undefeated in both "A” and "B” divisions to the tune of 45-18. Bob Johannson of Sheldon was high for the game with 14 points. Sheldon dominated the game throughout, taking an early lead and pulling farther and farther away as the game progressed. The winners were hitting very Frosh Wrestlers Win, P.S.C. Beats Varsity The Oregon Frosh and Varsity wrestlers split a pair of matches with the Portland State matmen. The Ducklings took a 28-5 win from the Viking Freshmen at Me Arthur Court Saturday, while at the same time in Portland the Duck varsity was becoming the fourth straight victim of the; Portland State varsity, 27-5. The Frosh dropped the first division and took a draw in the second but swept the other six weight classes. THREE OF THE Frosh wins came from forfeits. In the 137 pound class, Charlie Warren won on a forfeit. Doug Muck received a forfeit in the 147 pound class. Heavyweight Rick Burns had to settle for a forfeit in his class. Bill Campbell took the 157 pound class for the Frosh with a decision over Portland State’s Ken Schrock, 5-0. Bob Mosher, Don McConnell, and Jim Battaglia lead the Omega scoring with four points each. In the closest match of the af ternoon, Duckling A1 Lamp took a 2-0 decision from Bill White in the 167 division. THE OTHER Oregon win came in the 177 pound class, when Bob Keeney easily decisioned Lee Whitney, 10-0. The only Viking to win hia match was Jerry Veda who de cisioned Don Hildebrand, 9-2. The varsity match between the two schools proved to be almost a complete reversal of the Fresh man contest. The Ducks were only able to take one division while the Vikings won seven. The lone Oregon winner was heavyweight ace Gary Stensland. He pinned Jerry Luengen in 1:44. Stensland has the best individual record among the Oregon squad. Next week the Duck wrestlers travel to California to face the San Jose State Spartans and the University of California Bears. These will be the last two meets ~ for the team before they meet the Oregon State team to end their season.
