Sporting a high school atar at almost every position, the r>jck lings njii into an unknown quan tity in the Coubabe learn. In the same (situation last year, the highly heralded Frosh squad from Oregon got dumped, and dumped hard on frozen turf in Pullman. Thin year, however, the Ducks have Mel Renfro, and a fine ar ray of outstanding backfield tal JOHN ROBINSON, new freshman football coach, sends his Duoli linKs against the WSf C'oubahes today, In his first game as a head eoaeb. cnt, notably lacking on last year’s team, as only Duane Cargill is now playing on the varsity from that group. Renfro, one of Oregon’s all time high school greats, comes from Jefferson of Portland, and was not only an all-state selec tion both his junior and senior year, but was voted the most valuable player in last year’s state Shrine football game, fol lowing Terry Baker, present Ore gon State tailback, in that cap acity. New freshman coach, John Robinson said in sizing up the •quad, “We’ll just wait and see how they perform. They are un proven as of now.” Robinson replaced Brad Eck lund who Joined with the new Dallas coaching staff in the Na tional Football League. The new Duckling coach was assistant under Ecklund for two years, and played on the Webfoot Rose Bowl team of 1957-58. The Duckling team will have a pair of Californians going at ends, Difck Imwalle, from San Jose, and Dick Schwab of San Di ego. Both are 195 pounders. The team will have plenty of beef at tackle with Dennis Ma loney, a 227 pounder from Cleve- : land of Portland, and Mike Stro glnnis, from San Diego, another j of the many California players in the line-up. At guard, Robinson will pro- ] bably start Phil Cooper from San Diego, and Ron Jones of, North Salem. Pushing them hard | for positions will be Bob Keeney and Gene Brodsky. At center it is a battle between Larry Homya from Ontario, Ore gon and Ron Stratten of San , Francisco. Homya, who is co- ! captain with starting quarter back, Bill Berry, will most like ly get the nod. Berry, who according to re ports from practice scrimmages throws real well from the key passing, has a pair of top men right behind him in Doug Post of Oroville, California, and Max Chobian of Tulare, California. With three senior quarterbacks graduating next year from the Duck varsity, the performance OPEN TILL "2 A.M." (except Sunday) THE NEW ANCHORAGE Ducks favored... (Continued from page 4) week end, with one exception. Ron Snidow will ntep in at tackle for the injured Riley Mattson. One interesting sidelight to the Cal record shows the Bears to be a strong first half team, if noth ing else. The Bears have been tied with, or ahead of, their oppon ents at the end of the first half in each game with the exception of the opener against Tulane. In the second half it’s been a 1 different story: they’ve been out- ! scored 49-7. If they can put together four quarters of their first half brand of football tomorrow, it could mean trouble for the Ducks. t JUST RECEIVED — A NEW SHIPMENT OF red mmsoms Re-ordered by Popular Demand U of O CO-OP STORE TRY THE RUSH IHN For Coffee and Relaxation Quick, Courteous Service 854 E. 13th on the Campus of these three frosh could be im portant to future Duck teams, and they will all have possible shots at the starting line-up next year. Besides Renfro, the other start ing halfback will be Monty Fit chett of Kelso, Washington. Lar ry Hill of Astoria, and Dick Shanley from Coos Bay may also see action. At fullback the biggest fight for a starting position is being waged between Luscious Bain of Fort Vancouver, Washington, shifted from his high school half back spot, Bill Youngmayer of North Bend, and Bob Good of Canada who has an outside chance. The Coubabes will be slightly outweighed by the FYosh, but could be faster in the line. Only one Oregonian will be on the Coubabe starting eleven. He is end Bill Cook from Pendleton. With Jim Sutherland’s WSU teams having primarily passing offenses, fans can look for the air to be filled with footballs, many of which fly from the hand of quarterback Gary Pence. The Ducklings have a four game schedule this year, includ ing tilts with the OSC Rooks, October 27 in Portland and Nov ember 18 in Eugene, plus a game with the Washington Frosh in Seattle, November 11.
