Ducks to face Wolverines THE RIG AND THE LITTIJC of the U of O haekfleld here team in a handoff, Dave Grosz to Cleve land .lone*. The duo totaled 102 yards In Grosz to Jones passes last Saturday, not counting those called back because of penalties. Coach Len Casanova’s Oregon Ducks run headlong into the Michigan Wolverines this com ing .Saturday after dumping the University of Idaho, 33-6. despite many first half mistakes last week end. Led by the passing of Dave Grosz, and the sticky-fingered receiving of diminutive Cleveland Jones, the Ducks were in strong command throughout the Idaho battle, enabling Casanova to play all but four of his reserves. This could have been just what Cas was looking for, as sixteen sophomores saw action in the contest. Steve Barnett, chosen by the Saturday Evening Post as "one of the nation's outstand-1 ing sophomore linemen" was the single sophomore to start, most of the rest being on the second team. With the Duck head mentor thus building his reserve strength on sophomores with no varsity experience, it is essential that they see as much action as pos-i sible. Both the first and second teams wil meet a real test this coming weekend in Ann Arbor when they will face a Bump Elliot coached Michigan team that is reinforced Ly 29 returning lettermen. * Although few of the returning lettermen were starters on the 1959-60 edition of the Wolver ines. captain Jerry Smith an all big-ten choice at center, last year, is returning to the start ing lineup along with big-ten hurdles champ, Benny McRae, in the backfield. Although Elliot's ball club is ranked near the bottom of the big ten in most pre-season fore casts, they can't be dismissed as underdogs as they will be out lo maintain the big ten domin ance that has prevailed over Wes tern area teams in the last few years. With only one injury in the Idaho game, Greg Willener's sprained ankle, Casanova will probably go with the same start ing lineup as last week. This would put Grosz at quar terback. Jones and Dave Gray son at halfback, and Ben Sny der at fullback. Paul Bauge and Kent Petersen are probable starters at end as are Steve Barnett and Riley Mattson at tackles. Mike Rose and Dave Urell will be the most likely starters at guard as will Joe Clesceri at center. Behind Snyder at fullback are three able candidates for the po sition. Jim Josephson, Duane Car gill and Sam Owens. Backing up Grosz at quarterback will be two year letter-man Sandy Fraser. Fighting hard for halfback posi tions are Mickey Bruce, and Herm McKinney. Perhaps the deepest position on the Casanova choo-choo this year is end. Behind Peterson and Bauge are Greg Willener, Jerry Tarr, Len Burnett, John Polo and Dale Herron, ex-Webfoot basketball star. In the interior line, the “young “bulls,” meaning sophomores. Bill Swain, Ron Berg, Bill Dal Biag gio. Rich Dixon. Mickey Ording, Dennis Prozinski, and Ed Thom as will see much action, as will Ron Anderson, junior letterman. All these linemen, with the ex ception of Dixon, are well over 200 pounds. The battle Saturday will be the first look that Midwest fans and sportswriters will get at Cleve land Jones, the 5’ 3%” package of dynamite who is probably the smallest triple threat on the in tercollegiate scene today. Oregon fans who have seen him in the past are hoping he gives them a real show. Welcome Back!
