Original Canoe Fete used decorated canoes By DIANE BUCHANAN The coming of Spring marks, not only the return of the birds and • flowers, but also the bustling activity of students pre paring for the annual Canoe Fete. THIS ACTIVITY was begun by the Class of 1912 when the first Canoe Fete was observed from the banks of the Millrace. During the early history of the event, it was truly a “canoe” fete. Single, double, or chains of decorated canoes comprised the “t. rats” and foreshadowed the elaborate oildrum-buoyed floats of today. Although more sophisticated perhaps, the Canoe Fete’s of the ’50's still had much in common with Fete’s of their ancestry. As far back as 1915, passengers on the floats were forced to “aban don ship” because of ill-timed fires. The use of children on floats is not peculiar to the ’50’s but dates back to 1916. Also in that year, Ireland's swimming champion appeared on one of the floats. This introduction of celebrities anticipated the appear ance of Hogy Carmichatael and Bing Crosby at later Canoe Fetes. THE STUDENTS at the be ginning of the century had as little success as students of the ’50's in controlling the weather. In 1913 the Fete was rained out. Queens are not a current addition either, but pretty Ruth Warwick presided over the empty and very wet Canoe Fete during that year. Different methods of rewarding the best floats have been prac ticed. In 1916, $11, $6, and $3 were awarded the winning floats. In 1935 the winning float received a prize from Bing Crosby. The Canoe Fete has always been nucleus of Junior Week end, and until 1924 it was the sole event. THE LIFE of the Canoe Fete has been as hectic as it has been long. The fete took a nap from 1941 to 1955, during which time street parades were held. This weis because of the deterioration of the Millrace, World War II, and lack of enthusiasm. In 1955 the floats borrowed some of the best ideas from the pre-war fetes. In 1956 the broad and easy to work with theme, "As I Sit and Dream at Evening" was used. In 1956 the Millrace witnessed a little bit of “Disneyland." The romantic theme "Drifting and Dreaming" was portrayed by the 1958 floats. The 1959 Fete featured Oregon cities under the theme of “Oregon i Trailmarks.” R. D. HORN, professor of Eng lish, thinks the Canoe Fete is “important.” "It is the one thing that makes Oregon unique. We are good, surprisingly good, in sports and other activities; but these are highly coached and semi-professionalized. The Canoe Fete is genuinely creative and always a tremendous expression of student cooperativeness and devotion to the welfare of the University as a place to remem ber through life. Whatever aches and pains it costs are well re warded in the enthralled delight of the huge audiences who attend,” he said. King of Nepal coming ...
