Frosh co-eds assisted by counselors Frequent discussions, various duties, and a program of training are some of the activities re quired of counselors, who assist the housemothers in caring for the 2,000 women students who live in University housing. To assist these women bv coun seling them concerning all kinds of college problems, both personul and academic is one of the coun selor's primary duties. -Counsel ors must spend a good deal of time with each woman at their living organization, especially in the first part of the year, to establish a “common ground" be tween herself and the students. It is also necessary for the coun selor to have periodic talks with the students, to discuss her pro gress in college. The counselor is responsible for the encouragement of positive and responsible citizenship on the part of the group with which she works and the individual stu dents within that group. In addi tion to individual counseling, she carries out this phase of her re sponsibility by group work, and by setting the example in her own behavior. Duties named A counselor is occasionally asked to perform small admin istrative tasks such as distribut ing housing bills. She is also responsible for checking her stu- j dents into the hall when they arrive, making room assign ments, assuring that the hall is vacated in proper condition dur ing vacations, and correctly dis missing students when they leave the hall permanently. In addition, she may make changes as re quested anti as she things appro priate. The counselor performs a very necessary and important public relations function. She is often the only official of the University that parents meet personally, and they often view the University as they see it through her. Training Required A n Orientation Program i s held prior to the beginning of' the academic year to provide for training and planning.
