Sculpture is topic of lecture tonight Jan Zach, Inatructor in the School of Architecture and Allied Arta. will lecture on "Develop ment of Contemporary Sculpture" tonight at 7:30 in the SU. Thta lecture ia the firat of a aeries sponsored by the Creative Arta Committee. Zach la a native of Czecho slovakia. and studied at the Su perior School of Industrial Arta and the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. He came to the United States in 1938 to decorate the Czechoslovakian building at the New York World s Fair. From there he went to South America where he spent eleven years. He traveled to Brazil on a ■penal commission and collabo rated with leading architects in South America in the fields of painting, sculpture, book illus trations, and interior designing. He also taught part time but he was basically a free lance artist. He then went to Canada where he first taught at the University of Alberta. Next he taught at the Banff School of Fine Arts and finally he went to Victoria. B.C., where, with the cooperation of the Department of Education and the school board, he started his own art school. He was in Victoria until 1958 when he was called to the University. One of his works on campus is "Prometheus Bound" which stands near the Museum. Those who saw the University Theatre Production, "The Tempest" last year were able to view the unique stage set designed by Zach. Following the lecture, sand wiches and coffee will be served. Fulbrights available for graduating students Fulbright scholarship applica tions for 1960-1961 are now avail able to graduating seniors and graduate students, K. S. Ghent, associate professor of mathe matics, announced Friday. Approximately 950 scholarships are available. Included in the awards for 27 countries are 200 scholarships for study in Ger many, 175 for France and 94 in the United Kingdom. This year five University stu dents are studying abroad on Fulbright grants. They are Clif ford Ackley, Netherlands; Clarine Shemwell and Fred Stenkamps, Germany; Dorothy McBroom, France and Robert Adler, Eng land. Completed forms must be turned in by October 31. VICTOR M. (AP Wirephoto) Ballinger to talk on Conant report Two addresses in New Mexico and Arizona will be made during the coming week by Thomas O. Ballinger, head of the art educa tion division of the School of Architecture and Allied Arts. On October 20, Ballinger will speak at a meeting at the Uni versity of Arizona. He will ad dress a conference of the New Mexico Art Education on Octo ber 22. Ballinger, who has been a mem ber of a Ford Foundation group studying the teaching of art his tory in high schools, will speak on the place of art in the school curriculum. He will discuss the Conant report in respect to art education, explaining that the re port suggests the need for study and revaluation of current prac tice in the preparation of teach ers.
