It. ('. Iyonard Sociology Ib-purtrnent Emerald Editor: letters to the editor are a stupid waste of time and paper, (right, Mr. Colc?i written in the heat of indignation and some what aliocking to the author when finally seen in print. But what else can we do when the trivia of Thursday’s editorial page boots us In the face ? Gripe to our cell-mates? They alw'ays agree, no argument there: “I mean. like, give me one good reason why this dump has to have a swimming team. Hell, yes, we need a new pool, but that concrete and glass mon strosity?" "So the majority want our unfortunate tennis team to exist. Who says so? Who knows what the majority want? The Emerald?” "I don't know anybody who gives a damn about our tennis or golf teams, and, furthermore. I'm nauseated by the fact that $13.50 to my to-be-raised fees goes into the athletic fund to buy cars for high school football players— or does that come out of the general funds?” "No law says a university has to diddle around with athletics beyond the soma of football, (that does seem to be a law) and I wonder whether the success and/or popularity of our “minor” ath letics merits the time and money spent on them to the end that the athletic department has to have almost a half million every year in order to operate.” Oh, we are sick, and our values chug in this petty pace from day to day to the last syllable of our “Alma Mater” and all our SU committees have lighted fools the way to peptic ulcers. (Arise, Tfr>m Easton!) Sue Haffner Sophomore in General Arts and Letters Dear Sylvia, I’m flicking' in John. He doesn’t have any interest in my school work, he doesn’t like romantic things, and hates my brother. All he wants to do is eat. I can’t stand It any more. That’s the third boyfriend the D.Q. store has stolen from me. directly before the tournaments. However, Miss Bain claims that "It doesn't take enough time so that your grades go down." She plans to continue forensic work throughout college and will also continue working In the sym posium program which "gives personal contact with a live audi ence instead of only a few peo ple,” "You can apply these experi ences and the knowledge accumu lated to schoolwork and everyday living," she says, "and the prac tice in impromptu and extem poraneous speaking makes you so much more organized and fluent." In addition to this, Miss Bain meets many interesting people, such as Ted Jones, the son of singer Lena Home, who debates for USC, From her experience with other college forensic groups, Miss Bain has all kinds of praise for the UO team. ‘‘We have won more sweep stakes awards than any other school on the West Coast," she says with a twinkle. Miss Bain attributes much of this success to , the influence of W. 8. Nobles, di rector of forensics, whose “analy sis on the debate topics greatly helps the debaters."
