Noises come conflict Fetal pigs, bust-building hindrances to study plan By MARJORIE BURNS Emerald Staff Writer With finals approaching, the problem of studying becomes more of a reality, and with this reality comes a slow devouring disease that feeds on the nerves of most students. Irritating noises become louder, assignments become longer and days become shorter, but worse than these symptoms are the hundred new annoying habits that roommates develop. Noises have always caused the greatest amount of conflict. Crunch, crunch My own roommate has a habit of eating anything that crunches when she studies. If she isn’t eat ing. she’s chewing gum, not quiet ly or slowly but quickly, ner vously, loudly. Incidentally, graham crackers and crisp apples have the great est effect on me. Other common complaints : about noise are retracting ball point pens, playing the bongos, clicking fingernails against the front teeth, filing fingernails, tapping feet or singing off key, especially when the other person is playing a favorite record. “I can’t stand the way my roommate blows her nose,” .said one girl. “She doesn't get it over Chairmen selected for Weekend 'Sing' Chairman have been selected for the All-Campus Sing, which will be held during Junior Week end. U of 0 Co-Op Store in one healthy blast but keeps blowing softly, gently, endlessly.” zzzz Another girl complained that her roommate snapped the rubber band on her bite plate. Still others raved on about the common habits of slamming doors, snor ing and rustling papers early in the morning. Noises are not the only source of irritation. One girl is driving her roommate to a breakdown by humming tunelessly and buzzing domestically around, dusting, straightening books and airing out the room. One roommate kept a fetal pig for a week. Another is raising tadpoles, and her roommate has co stand outside with a glass to catch rainwater since regular water will kill the tadpoles. A general complaint is borrow ing things and not putting them away afterwards. One roommate has to keep mov ing her feet back and forth until she falls asleep. i “Every morning,” said another girl, "my roommate steps out of the upper bunk onto my face.” Hamburger, pizza Still another kept pieces of hamburger and pizza under her desk lamp sometimes up to five days. The smell, needless to say, was overpowering. “My roommate,” said one girl, j “is wonderful in nearly every re- | spect, but her bust-building ex ercises are driving me nuts.” These complaints are heard ! throughout the term, during finals, during finals week they will reach a crucial peak. Mov-! ing out is always a possible solu tion to the problem, but stick it out as long as you can. Perhaps your roommate will move first. The most traveled luggage in the world!
