World news (Continued from page 1) Jobless bill okayed WASHINGTON (UPI) — The House Ways and Means commit tee Thursday approved a measure to prevent some 300,000 jobless workers from losing unemploy ment compensation April 1. The bill, which goes to the House Monday, would extend tne emergency program only for workers who file valid jobless claims by April 1. The measure provides for no payments to jobless persons who exhaust their state benefits af ter that date. British position told BONN, Germany (UPI) — British Prime Minister Macmil lan—who started talks Thursday here with West German Chan cellor Adenauer outlined Britain's position on armed forces in cen tral Europe. A spokesman said Macmillan told Adenauer Britain is willing to negotiate a limitation of arm ed forces in Central Europe with out creating a military vacuum in the area. But the limitation would in volve no diseriminatk n against any weapon or nation, the spokes man said. Ike nixes wage boost WASHINGTON W — The Eis enhower administration came out Thursday against any increase in the present $1 an hour minimum wage. Organized labor and some Democrats in Congress are seek ing a rise to $1.25. Secretary of Labor James P. Mitchell made known the admin istration’s position. He said in a statement he would soon recom mend to Congress legislation to bring under the law “several mil lion workers’’ now exempt from its provisions. He came to the United States in 19-15 under contract with the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps and became an American citizen in 1955 Van Braun, who is only 47, re ceived his B.S. degree from the Institute Technical in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1931, and his Ph.D. from the University of Ber lin in 1934. Rocket fuel worker He was one of the first experi menters with liquid fuel rocket motors. , From 1932 to 1937, he was a liquid fuel rocket expert for the German Ordinance Dept., and from 1937 to 1945 was technical director of the German Rocket Research Center on the Baltic Sea. He developed the V-2 Long Range Rocket and the A.A. Guided Missile during the latter period. Worked at White Sands From 1945 to 1950, von Braun was with the U.S. Dept, of De fense Ordinance Dept, as tech nical advisor to the White Sands Proving Grounds project. In 1950, the rocket expert was appointed chief of the Guided Missile Development Division at the Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville. Alabama. He has also written several books on space travel. AWS to continue frosh handbook The AWS Legislature will ask the ASUO Senate for the pre vious year’s sum of $350 to be again included in the AWS bud get for publication of the AWS handbook. AWS vice-president Molly Burke reported the decision of the AWS cabinet to continue publication of the pamphlet at the March 5 meeting of the Leg islature. It was agreed that question aires be sent to freshman women concerning the value of the book let sent during the past summer to incoming freshman girls. Diana Scott, AWS president, announced the appointment of Lorcy Hoyt as I AWS representa tive from the University and Janet Lewis as chairman of the newly-organized AWS Scholar ship Foundation.
