Surplus Activities I’Cnntinunl from pane 2) underneath the general Home coming committee to construct a large sign, depleting the Homecoming theme, at Home centrally, located Hpot Bueh aa the Btudent Union. The Canoe Fete float con tPHt exists for reasons similar to the Homecoming sign con test. The problem 1h of much greater magnitude though, be cause without floats we would have no Canoe Fete. But the responsibility of houses to build these floats haH never been oueationed. So, “for the good of the house,” we spend an enormous amount of labor on building something, because we IIAVK to. Obviously such an under taking competes with the* aca demic demands of the Univers ity. I think our philosophy Is wrong here: If the Canoe Fete Is to be continued, then It ought to bo continued because those who work recognize that It ser- ' ves a purpose for the University and because It Is a voluntary effort on the part of the Individ uals and the groups involved. The elimination and-or modi fication of these three time consuming activities, seems to be the next step if we are to fol- i low the example of the Studertt Union Board. If these functions have real worth, then voluntary : planning aud participation will perpetuate them. If they can only be perpetuated by required 1 participation, then they must; have little real merit and there fore ought to die. Tonight and Saturday Opn 7:30—Show 8:00 Sunday Open 6:30, Show 7:00 6.
