Castell to speak at NW conference Alburey Castell, head of the department of philosophy at the University, will be among the speakers at a conference on re ligion in higher education. The conference will be held Friday and Saturday at the West Linn Inn. Faculty members of colleges and universities in the North west will attend the conference which is planned by the profes sors and made possible by a grant from the Board of Educa tion of the Methodist Church. The Stone Flower' next on Film Society slate This week’s Film Society selec tion will be “The Stone Flower,” a color film based on a series of Russian folk legends. Membership tickets will be on sale this week at the UT box office between 1 p.m. and 5, and between 7:15 and 8 Sunday eve ning before the show. Winter term memberships are $2. or both winter and spring term for $3.50. The first show of winter term will be Jan. 11. UT tryouts scheduled for early next week Tryouts for “Inherit The Wind” will begin Nov. 17, the University Theatre announced today. The tryouts will be held in Villard 104 on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings at 7. The play, which will be directed by Preston Tuttle, contains parts for over 50 characters. Scripts are available for overnight use and may be obtained from the speech department. The play will open Dec. 5. Registrar attends California meeting Clifford L. Constance, Univer sity Registrar, is in Long Beach, Calif, this week for a meeting of j the Pacific Coast Association of I Collegiate Registrars and Admis sion Officers. LOUIS (UPI) — The Unit ed Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Wednesday passed a resolution authorizing the union to pull out of the AFL-CIO. The resolution — approved by more than 1,200 of the 2,000 delegates to a convention — charged that AFL-CIO action and policies threaten the union’s interest and welfare. The reso lution empowers the Carpenters’ general executive board to take such action. James Curley dies BOSTON if) — James Michael Curley, last of the big city polit ical bosses, died Wednesday at City Hospital. He would have been 84 November 20. Curley was a Democratic lead er for more than half a century, serving four tearms as mayor of Boston, one term as governor of Massachusetts and four as a con gressman. Scabbard and Blade initiates senior men Scabbard and Blade, senior ROTC cadets honorary, held for mal initiation for eight seniors Tuesday, bringing total member ship to 18. A seven-member pistol team is presently being organized for na tional competition. Membership in Scabbard and Blade is by election. Qualifica tions include a GPA of 2.5, and standing in the upper third of the military class. Scabbard and Blade was found ed 54 years ago at the U of Wis consin. Oregon’s chapter was chartered in 1928. Military students chosen for awards For outstanding leadership and scholastic achievement, this year’ scholastic achievement, this year’s Army ROTC Distinguished Mili tary Students are: Ronald E. Bailey, Holman J. Barnes, Jny F. Bashor, David R. Beach, Robert L. Davis. Gene L. Estes, Richard C. Hall, and Donald H. Holman Jr. Other outstanding students are Philip H. Knight, Frederick L. I/ennai-d, Ralph Miller. Kurt IT. Molholm. Steven J. Nosier, George T. Okamoto, Ellis A. Olson, Rich ard A. Shaw, and William M. Shields. The DMS ratings are based upon students' work both here and at the six weeks’ summer camp session, which is held each year at Ft. Lewis, Washington. Friday deadline set for cartoon entries Friday at 9 a m. is the deadline for entries in the Cartoon contest. Entries should be in the cate gory of campus life, editorial, or general. ' This contest is open to all Uni versftv students, and all cartoons will be displayed in the SU Art Gallery. Contest rules and entry blanks may be picked up at the Program Directorate’s office in the SU. Gene Martin receives South American grant Gene E. Martin, assistant pro fessor of geology, has been granted an international educa tional exchange td lecture on ge-1 ography at the University of Buer.03 Aires, Buenos Aires, Ar gentine. The grant will be for the academic year 1959-60. The office of Sen. Richard L. Neuberger announced the award.
