UO Harriers Tip Washington State BY l'HIL KMGHT KrneraUl Sports Writer Washington State's invading track team gave Oregon a scare Saturday afternoon at Hayward field, but Bill Bovverraan’s Web foots survived the threat and went on to pfist a 71-59 victory over the fired-up Cougars, The triumph gave the Ducks their 20th straight dual meet win, but it was also the smallest victory margin since 1955. Only one meet record was set during the afternoon. Cougar Steve Frye tossed the shot put 51 feet, 'o inch, to wipe out the old mark of 51-8. set by WSC’s Burl Grinds last year. Oregon picked up its points in bunches. Sam Taylor, Dave Edstrom, and Steve Anderson combined to give the Ducks a sweep in the broad jump for the third time this year. Taylor led the trio with a leap of 22'9" followed by Kdstrom, 22’2”, arid “Andy,” 21’8”. Davis anil Dave F.dstront clear ed that height to tit* with Noil Dahmen and Don treswell. Davis' second place finish ;va» a pleasant surprise for !)uek Ih»ss Hill Kotvcrman. as Davis, better know n as a basket ball player, has only been out for practice a week. His fine per inance after so little work leaves Bowerman very opti mistic about Davis’ future. I a one oi the day's feature races Dave Edstrom gained revenge on U'SC's Spike Arlt in the high hurdles. Arlt defeated Edstrom two weeks ago in the Northern Division relays, but Dave won easily Saturday, in 15 flat, run against a stiff wind. Arlt was second in :15 2. Besides grabbing a second in the 220 and a third in the broad jump. YYebfoot decathlon ace captured top honors in the cen tury. Veteran Jack Morris broke on top in the hundred, but developed UP AND OVER goes Oregon's Jack Burg during Saturday’s dual meet with Washington State, which Webfoots won by comfortable 12-point margin. Veteran I'O pole-vaulter won his specialty with an effort of 13 ft. 10 inches, adding another first-place to his al ready long list. Mark Robbins and tiny Ed Baldwin also hurt Jack Moober ry’s club by going one-two in the two mile, thus outscoring the visitors, 8-1. Robbins coasted home the winner in 9:30, fastest dual meet time of his career, and Baldwin grabbed second in 9:33 for his fastest time ever. Oregon picked up seven first places in the meet, and the vic tory in the high jump was some what of a surprise. Junior Ken Grant, a Canadian gift to Oregon, was a doubtful jumper, after fighting a stiff battle with the flue all week. But Grant did compete, and when the crossbar reached 6’2”, Grant was the only one who could get ovei it, sick and well included. There was a four-way tie for second at 6 feet. Webfoots Otis a cramp, which slowed him tip considerably and he did well to finish thiid. WSC's Don Maw edged ahead when Morris faded, but Anderson boomed past the tiny Cougar in the final 10 yards for a narrow victory in the time of :10.2. Jim Grelle once again picked up more than his share of the points, by finishing a planned second in the mile, and then coming back 40 minutes later to run away from all the half milers in 1:55.3. Oregon’s other first place came in the pole vault, where Jack Burg, improving with every meet after a slow start, cleared 13'10” for an easy win. Burg just barely missed in three tires at the dual meet record height of 14 feet. FREE1 m lTe.EE09 INSTALLATION Of mufflers and tail pipes. Complete stock of standard mufflers. The Ducks’ "I points in the meet made a champion predictor I out of coach Bowerman for the second time in the year. Bow j erman figured his squad would score 70 points in the ND relays two weeks ago, and they finished 1 on top with 69’.•. Saturday he thought Ins athletes would be good for 71 points, their exact total. However, one wag comment ed after the np-ot that the rea son Bowerman. didn't load the relay (with the likes or Grelle, Anderson, -lerry Schwarz, etc.) was that he wanted to hit his Five UO Track Stars Accepi Relay Invitations Five members of the powerful j Webfoot track squad have ac ! cepted invitations to participate j in the famed Drake Relays next I Saturday at Des Moines, Iowa.
