This view of "the Quad" Is typical of the beautiful campus provided for the University’s 5500 students of today. Back in 18*0 the institution's few stu dens walked across open land at the east edge of Euiccie to brand new Heady Hall. It had b»fn built at a cost of $50,000 and donated to the state in a successful effort to get the ('Diversity located here. Nine presidents have served the school during its 80 years of constant progress. Day's Sharing Urged By President Wilson Charter Day is a time when faculty, staff and student body are asked to pause to pay tribute to those whose vision and unending devotion made possible the University we know today. Founded on October 16, 1876, the University of Oregon has had a distinguished his tory. You. the members of the student body are already a part of that history, whe ther you choose to he or not, for each person who ente his name upon the rolls of a school does from that mo ment on become a part of its history. I sincerely hope that each of you will share to the full est it> the Charter Day ob servance. In so doing you will contribute to the great tradition which is the Uni versity of Oregon, and at the same time enjoy the rare privilege of hearing, from men of great distinction, discussions which will make more significant and relevant all else that you do here as stu dents. O. Meredith Wilson President New Amphibians Pledqed at Pool Forty-five University women pledged Amphibians, women’s swimming honorary, during a poolside ceremony held at Ger linger pool last night. Lee PuBridge will address the colorful convocation, for which all 2 and 3 o'clock classes have been adjourned, on "Science, The Servant of Mankind." A proces sion of faculty members in aca ROBERT RE!)FIELD Ballroom Lecturer den’ic robes will form in front of Fenton Hnll at 2 p.m. and walk across the campus to McArthur Court. Awards to Be Presented University Singers and the Uni versity Band will participate in the program. A highlight will be the presentation of Awards for Distinguished Service to three Oregonians being recognized by a faculty committee for their great service to mankind. They are Ernest Bloch, composer and music teacher; James Gilbert, former dean of the college of lib cral arts; and Charles Sprague, publisher of the Oregon States man of Salem and a former Gov ernor of Oregon. The University library and the I ! Student Union soda bar and rec reation area will be closed from 2 to -I p.m. to allow members of the staffs to attend the convoca tion. Kedfield Lectures Tonight Robert Rc-dfield, a noted an thropologist. will lecture tonight ' at 8 in the S.U. Ballroom on "The Genius of the University.” DuBridge, the convocation lec turer. has been President of Cali fornia Institute of Technology 'since 1946. Queen Hopefuls Set interviews Interviews for Homecoming Queen began Tuesday night in 1 the Student Union and will con tinue tonight and Thursday. The queen will be announced at the bonfire during Homecom ing Weekend after two all-cam pus votes.
