Judy Garland
The Judy Garland show will
appear in McArthur court, July
14. The show, designed to feature
Miss Garland throughout, has a
company of 40 performers in
cluding Jerry Gray and his or
chestra, comedian Frank Fon
taine, the Hi-Lo’s singing group
and many others.
It is staged by Charles Wal
ters. a leading* Hollywood di
rector. Special material and
songs were written by Robert
Edens, anJU-G-M writer.
Miss Garland is one of the
great names in show business
and has appeared in nearly every
phase of entertainment. Her
most recent success was in “A
Star Is Born," which won her
the Academy Award nomination.
Plans for the sale of tickets
will be announced in a few days.
'Kiss Me Kate
Summer Starter
Leading off a full summer sea- j
son of productions at University
Theater this year will be another
run of the Broadway musical,
"Kiss Me Kate,” which completed
an eight-day presentation this
week to full houses every night.!
Most of the cast which appeared
in the May production of the Cole
Porter hit will be back for the
summer production June 23, 24
and 25.
Also planned for the summer
season is presentation of the light
comedy, “Kind Sir,” in an arena
style production July 8 and 9.
“Club Intime,” the popular
night club-style revue held Wed
nesday evenings in the fishbowl
of the Student Union during sum
mers is being resumed starting
July 13, according to Gene Wy
ley, theater business manager.
The weekly party includes an
orchestra, dancing on the terrace,
floor show, and soft drinks at the
SU soda bar.
At least two other new shows
will be presented during the
summer, Mrs. Wiley announced.
One will be an arena-style pro
duction and the other a new
dramatic show on the main:
stage.
Tickets for the summer pre
sentation of “Kiss Me Kate” will
go on sale at the theater box
office at 1 p.m. June 20.
Crowds warmly received the
“Kate” production this past
week, which was presented at the
annual spring musical comedy.

If anyone is interested in go
ing on one last big movie binge
this weekend, the Eugene the
aters are offering some possibili
ties.
According to Hollywood, “The
End of the Affair,” starting Sun
day at the Heilig, is a love story
so overwhelming in its emotional
inteensity, so intimate in its
probing of a man and woman ir
resistibly drawn toward each ;
other, that from now one all such
stories probably will be meas
ured against it.
This story to end all stories is
concerned with Bendrix (Van!
Johnson), who in wartime Lon-'
don falls in love with Sarah
(Deborah Kerr), wife of a gov- ,
ernmenl official Henry (Peter
Cushing). Bendrix is injured;

ly traps Sarah in his apartment;
she refuses to see him again and
he jealously believes she had
tired of him and wanted him
dead.
Bendrix employs a private de
tective to watch Sarah. The de
tective steals Sarah's diary and
Bendrix discovers too late that
Sarah's love for him had been
overpowering and that it was his
own inordinate jealousy which
led to the end of the affair.
Oozing with Kmotlon
Based on Graham Green’s nov- j
el. this film is oozing with emo-1
tion and 9hould be a good way to
waste a couple of hours. The
companion feature is about the j
“Wyoming Renegades,” wha
were such terrific fellows that
no man's wife or life or land was
safe when they rode.
The world's oldest profession
gets a fresh glance at the May
flower in the film that the world
dared France to make, "Com
panions of the Night." Their
name is different, but what they
offer is the same, according to
the posters. This film is not for
the children.
The companion feature "Strat
ford Adventure” is an interest
ing English movie. The May
flower ends their season with
two more foreign films, "The
Green Scarf,” starring Michael
Redgreave. and “The Bells of St
Triniana."
"Soldier of Fortune” plays this
weekend at the McDonald. Based
on Ernest Gann's novel, this pic
ture tells the daring and breath
taking rescue of a trapped man
from behind the "bamboo cur
tain.” Filmed in Hong Kong, the
key of the film is Intrigue and
suspense. The adventure lover
will find that this drama has its
momenta
Returning to Eugene screens
for another attempt at enter
taining the public are fine shows
as "East of Eden,” “Lili,”
"Battle Cry," and “Bridges at
Toko-Ri.”
Elia Kazan, according to a well
known news magazine, does his 1
best with John Steinbeck's worst
in "East of Eden." which plays
Friday and Saturday at the Mc
Kenzie. The theme of the picture :
is the eternal struggle between
good and evil. This drama uses .
color, photography, sound, and
movement In a way that reaches
near perfection.
Starring in this passion-packed
peageant are newcomer James
Dean, Julie Harris, and Raymond
Massey.
Leslie Caron has already
charmed thousands in her role
as "Lili” and will win new fans
at the Motor-Vu Drive-In. where
the film begins Sunday. This
light, loveable, and laughable
fantasy is colorful, musical, and
danceful.
"Battle Cry” opens Sunday at
the Eugene Drive-In. Based on
the popular novel, this film is a
lusty drama of the United States
Marines in World War II and
their loves. disappointments,
heroism, and such things. It is
a sensitive account of the emo
tions of men and women who
find their lives disrupted by war.

at the North-End Drive-In,
"Bridges at Toko-Rl” tells the
story of the navy air force in the

To Serve in Egypt
J. Francis Rummel, assistant
professor of education, has been
selected as a consultant to the
Egyptian minister of education.
The appointment was made by
the Foreign Operation Adminis
tration of the state department.
Hummel will be in Egypt for
two years and will leave Eugene
early in June, spending two
weeks in Washington, D.C., in
an orientation course.
