in a scoreless deadlock. But then

The next two hitters flied out, but

Cougar Runners
Take 12 Events
By Jim White

Pullman — The Washington
State Cougars won their third
consecutive Northern Division dual
meet here Saturday, taking 12 of
15 events to smash Oregon’s Ducks,
86-44. It was not an inglorious
defeat for the Webfoots. It could
almost be called a moral victory
for the Eugene men, as many of
them came through with, brilliant
performances.
Oregon entered the meet heav
ily unfavored, with numerous in
juries .and the rigors of a long
trip for good measure. The Ducks
were -spread thinly over the 15
events and some men entered as
many as three events. Considering
everything, the Oregon men gave
a . “better than could be expected”
performance.
Fred Turner came Into his own
as a distance runner after a poor
showing last year. He trailed
W'SC’s Lou Montoya for three
laps and then, on the last quar
ter, he came through with a kick
that sent him across the > finish
line in a time of 4:23.
Doug Clement piled up more
points for the Ducks in the 440.
Again only one Oregon man was
entered /ind again he ran away
from the field. In the half-mile,
A1 Martin, a miler, finished inches
, behind Bill Link of WSC, with a
j very good time of 1:54.5. Link set
a new meet record with his time
of 1:54.1.
Howard McCants lived up to
his record as a high jumper when
he cleared the bar at 6'2" without
JANTZEN Swimming suits and
sport shirts at . . . FENNELL'S
warming: up and with a sweat suit
on. Bob Faucett, Oregon’s top
high jump man, tried the broad
jump for the first time in his life
and came through with a leap of
21’9” to capture second.
Al Fisher, the Cougars ace dis
tance man, broke his own record
In the two miles with a time of
9:27.3. Bob Gary’s time of 20.9
In the 220 dash also beat the
meet record but was not allowed
as the wind was a bit too strong.
The meet ended on a note of mis
fortune for the Ducks. Doug Clem
ent, Oregon's anchor man in the
mile relay, made up some twenty
yards to overtake WSC’s Don Hor
ner only to drop the baton in the
stretch. He finished the race two
strides ahead of Horner but the
Oregon team was disqualified.
