Bill Sundstrom and Fred Duncan each picked up half a point for OSC in individual com petition. Oregon's varsity and frosh ten nis teams, on the other hand were succumbing to the Oregon State nettcrs, 7-0 and 6-1. Cougar Runners Take 12 Events By Jim White Emerald Sporttwriler Pullman — The Washington State Cougars won their third consecutive Northern Division dual meet here Saturday, taking 12 of 15 events to smash Oregon’s Ducks, 86-44. It was not an inglorious defeat for the Webfoots. It could almost be called a moral victory for the Eugene men, as many of them came through with, brilliant performances. Oregon entered the meet heav ily unfavored, with numerous in juries .and the rigors of a long trip for good measure. The Ducks were -spread thinly over the 15 events and some men entered as many as three events. Considering everything, the Oregon men gave a . “better than could be expected” performance. Fred Turner came Into his own as a distance runner after a poor showing last year. He trailed W'SC’s Lou Montoya for three laps and then, on the last quar ter, he came through with a kick that sent him across the > finish line in a time of 4:23. Doug Clement piled up more points for the Ducks in the 440. Again only one Oregon man was entered /ind again he ran away from the field. In the half-mile, A1 Martin, a miler, finished inches , behind Bill Link of WSC, with a j very good time of 1:54.5. Link set a new meet record with his time of 1:54.1. Howard McCants lived up to his record as a high jumper when he cleared the bar at 6'2" without JANTZEN Swimming suits and sport shirts at . . . FENNELL'S warming: up and with a sweat suit on. Bob Faucett, Oregon’s top high jump man, tried the broad jump for the first time in his life and came through with a leap of 21’9” to capture second. Al Fisher, the Cougars ace dis tance man, broke his own record In the two miles with a time of 9:27.3. Bob Gary’s time of 20.9 In the 220 dash also beat the meet record but was not allowed as the wind was a bit too strong. The meet ended on a note of mis fortune for the Ducks. Doug Clem ent, Oregon's anchor man in the mile relay, made up some twenty yards to overtake WSC’s Don Hor ner only to drop the baton in the stretch.
