Ducks, Idaho Battle for Place Spot
Behind League-leading Washington
With the University of 'Washington Huskies apparently
high and dry after eight consecutive Northern Division I’kk
victories, the focus has shifted onto the three-way scramble
for second place.
The leading contenders for the runner-up slot, the h niver
sity of Idaho Vandals and the Uni
versity of Oregon Webfoots,
knock heads tonight and Saturday
in a two-game series which can go
a long way in determining the place
horse. Starting time for both Mc
Arthur court games are 8 p.m.
Oregon State's Rooks and the
Duck Frosh meet in the opener to
night at 5:45 and Everybody’s
Drug of Eugene" is billed for the
Saturday prelim, also at 5:45 p.m.
Holland Doubtful
Bruised Barney Holland, Web
foot guard who collided with the
floor Saturday at Corvallis, ex
perimented with a protective face
guard Thursday, but it is doubtful
whether or not he will be allowed
to play in the opener. Otherwise
Bill Borcher will open with his
regulars—Keith Farnam and ES
Ilalberg. forwards: Chet Noe, cen
ter; and Bob Hawes aud Kenny
Wegner, guards.
Hank Bonnenian and Bob
Stout are slated for action in
order to combat the towering
visitors’ starting five, which av
erages over six-feet, four iijchps.
Stout, who was a standout on
the boards against Oregon State
last weekend, missed three days
of practice in order to report to
his San Rafael, Calif, draft
board for a physical exam
ination.
Chuck Finley’s Vandals were
extended a mixed reception Tues
day and Wednesday at Corvallis
where the hot and cold Oregon
State Beavers split a pair of
games with them. Hartley Kru
ger’s two-pointer in the final four
seconds of the opener gave the
Moscow quintet a 64-62 victory,

Kruger, who was named to the
all-Northern division team a year

leading scorer with 183 points in
10 games. The veteran center
from Spokane, Wash, stands six

a good share of the visitors' offen
sive rebounding.
Forward Motion
One of the Northern section's
stars is “Freckles" Dwight
Morrison, six-foot, eight inch for
ward and one of the better re
bound hawkshaws in the North
west. Bill Mather, six-foot two
inch senior, longshot artist, opens
at the other front line post.
Tommy Flynn and Bruce Mc
Intosh are the starting guards.
Both are veterans from last
year; the Vandals lost only three
experienced ballplayers, Herb
Millard, Sain Jenkins and Stu
Dollinger.
Idaho has a second platoon
which sees some action. Forwards
for the reserve squad are Jim
Sather and Harlan Melton, last
season's freshman sensation; Rog
Lillibridge is at center; and C. W.

VANDALS EXPECTED to do the most in “for
warding” Idaho's campaign for second place in
the Northern division are Forward Dill Mather,
ibove, and Dwight Morrison, another forward,
right. Mather and Morrison will lie in McArthur
-onrt tonight when the V andals and the I niversity
jf Oregon flash in the first of a two game series.
Ducklings Slate Rooks,
Everybody's Drug Store
Boasting an over-all record of
nine wins and five losses the
Oregon frosh basketballers will,
this week-end, attempt to turn the
tables on two of the teams who
have interrupted their winning
ways in the past.
Friday night the Ducklings will
play their fourth game of a five
game series with the Oregon State
Rooks and their incomparable
scoring machine, Swede Halbrook.
The Rooks have downed Don
Kirsch’s lads three times this sea
son so the Frosh are quite anxious
to break into the victory column
against their traditional rivals.
To add incentive to the Duck
ling winning desire the Kooks
will bring with them an im
pressive seasonal record of 13
wins without a defeat and noth
ing would please the local five
more than to nmr this perfect
mark. After dropping the first
two to the Kooks by big mar
gins, 07-50 and 01-42, the Frosli
came back strong last Saturday
night at Corvallis to give the
Staters many anxious moments
before succumbing to their foe,
52-51.
Saturday evening the Ducklings;
will take on Everybody's Drug, an
A.A.U. team, for the third lime
this year and have high hopes of
avenging two earlier defeats by
them. In both their games with
the "Druggists” the Frosh have
held large halftime leads only to
blow the margin in the second
half.
Coach Don Kirsch will probably
start a line-up consisting of John
Foster and Gary McManus at the
forward spots, Max Anderson at
center, and >John Keller and Dick
James at the guard positions. Also
sure to see extensive action a:-c
Kent Dorwin, Bob Hazel, and Don
Porter.

Home Season
The Oregon swimming team lias
its first dual-meet of the season on
tap Saturday when the squad
tangles with the Multnomah Ath
letic club of Portland. The meet,
a non-conference affair, will be
held in the men’s pool 3:00 p.m,
and is wpen to the public.
For the past week Duck
swimmers have been concentrat
ing on turns and strokes. Al
though if is customary to have
a light practice tile daj before
a meet, Coach John liorchardt
planned to run the squad
through a stiff workout today.
He stressed the need for good
conditioning, as conference ac
tion starts next week.
Oregon will be slight favorites
to take the meet. Last week, the
Ducks outseoiied the Multnomah
Athletic club 113-82 in the senior
men’s division meet held in Port
land.
Yosh Terada and Gordon Ed
wards sparked the Ducks to their
win. Edwards scored 22 points and
Terada 23 and one half points.
Pete Van Dijk, ex-Oregon swim
mer, and George Claussen are ex
pected’ to give the webbed-feet
trouble in the 300-yard free-style
and the 100-yard backstroke. Both
men scored points for MAG in the
A'AU meet.
