| DUCKTRACKS By SAM FIDMAN •Emerald Sports Editor A once proud ship rides at anchor—now but a shattered hulk She has put into port for repairs, to have the barnacles scraped oft and a new bow welded on. 1 hat is the impression Hayward Field leaves now that tin famous—or infamous— “horseshoe” has been torn down ant carted away. Junior W eekend visitors will see a sight that tliet have never seen, unless they matriculated in the days bevond re call. Here is the story on Hayward Field, as it “stands” today. /' survey of the entire University of Oregon athletic facilities was sWu ted in mid-April, and the results of that survey are schedulec tentatively to be released sometime around the middle of Tune. Hollis Johnston's Task Hollis E. Johnston, Portland architect, and U.O. alumnus, it handling the task. Johnston, member of the class of ’21, was tin architect for Lincoln High School in Portland, and worked or Bonneville Dam. His survey includes an overall expansion program for Hay ward Field, with an ultimate goal of a stadium that will seat 40, 000. There will be no construction done in time for the opening game this autumn. The first lap of construction, however, will be ready for tin 1951 Homecoming Game here against Oregon State. The stadium presently will seat somewhere in the neighbor hood of 17 or 18,000—for this year’s home gridiron games. This figure includes the part permanent, part portable bleachers that made their debut last season. Delayed Action and Bugaboos The overall plan calls for expansion in delayed action bursts For example, when the first construction assignment is completed it will mean an addition of some 12-15,000 seats. That would bring the total capacity to around 30,000. Another projected building burst, or perhaps two more, de pending on that old bugaboo, finances, will boost the figure tc the grand total goal of 40,000. Among other building phases, the Johnston survey will alsc cover the problem of shifting the location of the swimming pool, and plans for bigger and better military equipment—which might result in an armory.. One unsolved question about Hayward Field is whether or not the entire staduim will be under cover—or part dressed—part undressed. The additional expense of providing cover is amaz ing, in proportion to the entire expenditure figure. A Dose of the Same It has also been pointed out that Oregon has not been rained on for home football games for many and many a year. If the players have to get wet, why shouldn’t some of the spectators get the same, a wise ( ?) observer observed. A very quick, and very unofficial scanning of football plants in other parts of the nation indicates that the covered stadium is definitely an oddity. So, the scale is weighted heavily in favor of the rest of Hayward Field being left in the open, but the final de cision could still go the other way. Oregon-OSC Track Form Chart Sees Webfoots as 83-48 Victor« By DAVE TAYLOR Predicted Final Score: Oregon 83, Oregon State 48. 100-yard dash—1 Fell (O); 2 Bullier (O); 3 Cleary (O). This looks as secure as first and second in the pole vault. Points, Oregon 9. 220-yard dash—Same as Century but Cleary is not as strong in this event. Points, Oregon 9. 440-iyard dash — 1 Henthorne (0); 2 McKay (OSC); 3 Country man (O). This is figuring McKay high, but the Bevos got to get some marks. Points, Oregon 6, OSC 3. 880-yard run—1 McClure (O); 2 ..Fullerton (OSC); .3 ..Fisher (OSC). Too bad Bonerman doesn’t have a depth man here. Points, Oregon 3, OSC 4. Mile run—1 Hutchins (O); 2 Petterson (OSC); 3 Backlund (O). Depending on whether Hutch runs and how that bad leg fares when he starts to kick in the stretch drive. Points, Oregon 6, OSC 3. Two-mile — 1 Mundle (O); 2 Fisher (OSC); 3 Roppel (OSC) Don’t be too surprised if an Oregon man doesn’t take third since the 22-man rule doesn’t hamper Bow erman today. Points, Oregon 5 OSC 4. High Hurdles — 1 Jack Doyle (O); 2 Turner (OSC); 3 Sullivan (O). Jack’s little brother will be trying to get a point here for the Bevos. Points, Oregon 8, OSC 1. Low Hurdles—1 Jack Smith (O); 2 Sullivan (O); 3 Doyle (OSC) Sully may take this again this week if Smith is tired from broad pumping. Points, Oregon 8, OSC 1, Pole vault—1 Rasmussen (O); 2 Pickens (O); 3 Dickey (OSC), Could easily be another sweep it Dickey gets jittery against the 'Whites' Paste 'Greens', 20-13 Johnny McKay’s “Whites” chal ked up a 20-13 gridiron victory Friday afternoon at Hayward Field, as Bob McClure's “Green” fell by the wayside in the fourth quarter. Everything was even-stephen, with a 13-13 deadlock facing both squads, until that last quarter when Quarterback Earl Stelle un leashed a short pass to Dick Daugherty. The new-found end grabbed the aerial, and with the aid of Gus Knickerhem’s convoy assistance, crossed the goal standing up. A sparce crowd gathered in the still-standing bleachers of Hay ward Field to witness the full scale football extravaganza, replete with referees and “crowd patter.” Carl “Big Train” Ervin, sleek, but massive “green” fullback broke the scoring ice in the first quarter when he hit between his own left end and left tackle to streak some 25 yards to a touchdown. Jim Aiken, head football coach, and a crew of cameramen gathered atop the pressbox to take moving pictures of the game. IM Derby (Continued from page 14) versity of Wisconsin, and San Jose State. They all contain a wealth of information. Ike Deeter, boxing coach at WSC wrote: “The average fellow, if he works out 2 or 3 weeks, should be able to go three (3) one and one half (11/2 ) minute rounds with one minute rest in between. However, in your matches, in the event someone gets tired and is being outclassed, do not hesitate to stop it. Safety should be your first throught in a program such as you are undertaking.” Deeter further suggested: “Since you do not have an intercollegiate program you probably want every one to box ... if you want a lot of representation, making it strictly a novice tournament, you should eliminate fellows who have had Golden Glove experience or Inter collegiate experience, to the point where they will outclass everyone in their weight.” Frank Young boxing coach at Idaho related that a three day tour nament is run-off for IM boxing— a tournament which usually draws a total attendance of 10,000 to 12, 000—very good in my book. Ducks’ three greats. Points, Ore gon 8, OSC 1. Broad jump—1 Lewis (O); 2 McCafferty (OSC); 3 Smith (O). Lewis has yet to regain his form of last season. Points, Oregon 6, OSC 3.
