Webfoots Battle Washington Tonight LOUIE SORIANO is the top point-getter for the Washington Hus kies, and the chunky howitzer artist will get special care from the Ducks when they clash with the Northern Division leaders tonight at Seattle. The Bremerton sparkplug tops his club in scoring, foul conversions, and personal fouls, and is second in shooting percentage with a .844 mark. Thefa Chi, Sammies, Chi Psi, Sigma Nu Win IMs The first round of intramural “B” basketball competition was completed Thursday night except for one game which will be taken care of today. Lop-sided contests were won by Theta Chi and the Sammies, while Campbell, Club, Sigma Nu, SAE, and the Chi Psis had to work a lit tle harder for their victories. CAMPBELL CLUB WINS Campbell Club dropped P h i Kappa Sigma, 8-4, with both teams losing all but occasional contact With the basket. SIGMA NUS VICTORS Sigma Nu defeated Delta Upsi lon, 16-11, in another game that certainly didn’t prove defensive basketball is gone forever. Neither did it prove the success of offen sive basketball. THETA Clil TRIUMPHS Theta Chi came down off the hill to hand the Tekes a 25-7 walloping, The Little Reds coupled a fast break with a tight defense to frus trate all efforts of the toppled Tekes. LAMBDA CHI DROPPED The other runaway of the night was staged by the Sammies, who ran away from Lambda Chi to the tune of 20-8. The winners built up a, comfortable halftime lead and coasted the rest of the way. SAE TOPPLES DELTS Sigma Alpha Epsilon took ad vantage of a loose Delt defense in the first half and built a big enough lead to carry them to a 20-13 win. The Delts plugged the holes some what in the last half and staged an offense of their own, but it was not enough. UW Coach Art McLarney will have his “Big Five” ready to go against Oregon. This aggregation of net-swish ers includes Hal Arnason, Ea Don Henson, Duane Enochs, Lou ie Soriano, and Frank Guisness. It’s the last two men who have given Husky fans the biggest thrills so far this season. Soriano is the leading scorer of the season, with 167 points to his record. This mark puts him at sec ond in the Northern Division, be hind Washington State’s Gene Con ley. The driving little guard is also the third highest man in the divi sion in points per game, with a record of 12.8 markers. The other guard, Guisness, is right behind Soriano in total points, with 146, to rank second on the Washington team. That also puts him at third place in the division records for total scoring Guisness, a sophomore from Van couver, Wash., ranks sixth in the average-points-per-game column of division records. Six-foot, five-inch Duane En ochs is also figured to give any opposition plenty of trouble un der the boards. They held their last workout in McArthur Court Wednesday afternoon Coach John Warren gave his charges a session at one end of the floor, using alternately an Frosh-Rook Contest Set for Iqloo Tonight The Oregon Duckling basketball team will meet the Oregon State Rooks tonight in the first game of the annual “little civil war” at 8 p.m. in McArthur Court. The Rooks will act as hosts for the second meeting, to be held Sat urday night in Corvallis. Coach Don Kirsch’s Frosh hoop men are especially keyed up to av erage the four straight defeats suf fered at the hands of the Junior Beavers last seanson. They will be slight favorites due to their undefeated status in seven official games played to date, while the Rooks have taken to the floor only once, producing an impressive 48-27 win over Hood River high school last Fri day. Chet Noe and Hank Bonneman, towering 6-foot, 7-inch scoring wiz ards, will give the Ducklings a slight edge in height over their op ponents, although the Beavers boast three tall firs as starters in Center Bob Adrian and Forward Bill Storye, both of whom stretch to the 6-foot, 4-inch mark, and Irv Lahti, the other forward, who meas ures 6 feet 2 inches. Rounding out the State start ers are a pair of speedy guards. Carlyle Staab, former Baker High flash, and Ben Pother, sec ond-string Allstate last year from Salem. Kirsch has been working his charges overtime all week in an attempt to tighten the Duckling defense, one of the sore spots in early season games. Vast improvement has been shown recently, as was evidenced in last Tuesday’s 71-53 triumph over the Oregon Lumber Sales crew. Probable starters for the Green men are Jim Livesay and Chet Noe, forwards, Hank Bonneman, center, and Bud Covey and Nich Schmer, guards. In Wednesday’s practice, For ward Dale Warberg started the af ternoon with little trouble from his injured thigh, but the sore muscle weakened under the strain of heavy running. Warberg had to be bench ed for the rest of the session. Will Urban gave fans who watch ed the practice a scare when he collided with Mel Streeter under the basket and suffered a slight gash on his right eye. Will was pro nounced ready to continue a few minutes later by team physician Dr. George Guldager and Trainer Tom Hughes. Reserves who looked good in the Wednesday practice were Mel Streeter and Paul Cooper. Street er continually drove in under the basket to hook up seemingly im possible shots. Cooper did some beautiful faking and netted several over-the-head hook shots from the key hole. (Please turn to page five) Everyone's Doing It; Blue 'nfGold Falls to Denver DENVER — (UP) — Denver’s Chevrolets, getting more than half of all the rebounds, scored a 53-50 National Industrial Basketball vic tory over the Blue ’n Gold of Oak land here in the second of a two game series. The Oakland five won the first game Wednesday night, 54-53. Denver had to come from be hind to notch last night’s win as they failed to hit from the floor in the first six minutes. But once the Chevrolets got moving, they forged to the front and made Oak land play their game for the last 30 minutes. Big Bill Tom, former Rice center, broke the Oakland quintet tonight. He was unstoppable with a jump shot from the pivot slot and took home second honrs with 20 points. He was helped in the winning ef fort by Harold Howey, who col lected seven counters and Thornton Jenkins who got eight. Don Barksdale, Oakland’s great center, didn’t have the shooting eye that he did Wednesday night when he made 25 points. He was held in check by Gordon “Shorty” Carpenter, and was able to make only 12 points last night.
