DUCK TRACKS By TOM KING Oregon's ever-lively athletic scene is always watered clown with a smattering of questions, sound or otherwise. Here’s a few of them just tostart the weekend hibernation. How will Honest John Warren’s bunch of basket bombers do against Oregon State in ■Corvallis the next 8 p.m.? \\ ho is the Webfoot most likely to capture All-ND glory— and why? Just how good is young, gangling Gene Conley, the WSC center. And how did this Mr. Conley hold his own last week against the Webfoots. How important is the OSC game tonight? And how more important is next week’s two gamer with Washington. Will Ken Hunt make his way into the starting lineup again or will Warren permanently re move him from the regulars ? How about the two-minute rule and what Oregon will do about it. SLATS GILL And the Big Question 1 hat s a goodly number of questions. All of which makes for a goodly number of answers. Here's a rundown on a few of them. Warren throws in a spurred up outfit against the Beavers in spacious Gill Pavillion tonight. However, Honest John doesn’t expect either Paul Sowers or Will Urban to be at their peaks-. Both haven't quite fully recovered from their layoff. Sowers is still wearing a brace. Which is precisely why he was caught traveling so much against the WSC Cougars last weekend. He couldn't stop, step and in general, mobile. Still, as long as fellows like Mel Krause, a stickler for condi tion and a ball player’s ball player, are in there, the Ducks will do all right. Incidentally, Warren is looking forward to playing in Gill Stadium. Those traditional cat-calls that always resounded from the rafters of that old “match-box” were anything but pleasant. Urban the Man of the Division? Urban is the gentleman who is the most likely to succeed in so far as KB honors go, according to Warren. And here’s the rea son why: Urban combines plenty of that ol’ spark plus the knack of taking the rebounds. He’s unadulterated dynamite off the boards. Witness what he did against Gene Conley Saturday. Urban pulled in 17 rebounds and Conley 11. That’s pretty fair pulling in. Along with everyone else who has seen him play, Warren thinks Conley “can't miss.” He’s got grace, poise and sheer abil ity. John believes a big man might be able to stop him now, but by next season Conley should be unsurpassed. The only short ( coming Conley apparently has is his ability to take a beating, ^e's not overly strong and his shoulders are not overly broad. This, says Warren, is a definite handicap. Hunt Will Return Tonight’s game certainly is a key one. And you can double that in spades since it’s a one and not two-game series. Next week’s pair with Washington will be even more important. A sweep by either team would put it far out in front in the ND race. Warren says that although Ken Hunt has been lifted from the starting lineup now, he’ll probably return to it in the near future. Hunt is having typical “sophomoritis,” which is not uncommon. Most folks say they haven’t noticed any slacken ing in Hunt’s performance, but Warren figures it differently. Now about the controversial and muchly brow-beat two minute rule. Last Friday, when trailing Oregon by a puny mar gin. Washington State rolled over and played dead. They didn’t attempt to rassle the ball away from the Lemon-and-Green, pos sibly figuring it rvouldn’t do them any good. However, Warren has different ideas. He thinks that method is of the “everything to lose, nothing to gain” sort. So he’ll bank on scrappers like Bob Lavey and Jack Keller to go in there and get possession of that ball. Eugene Baseball Business Manager Walter Nellis said yesterday that the Eu gene Baseball dub of the Far West League has signed a work ing agreement with the Boston Red Sox of the American League. The agreement promises Eugene “seven key players” through San Jose of the California League, Nellis said, * ' Sammies, Theta Chi Butcher Foes; Stan Ray, SAE, Chi Psi Pi Kaos Win IM SCHEDULE Basketball 3:50 40 Phi Delta Theta A vs Phi Kappa PsI A 3:50 43 Lambda Chi Alpha A vs. Phi Gamma Delta A 4 :S5 40 Alpha Tau Omega A vs. Kappa Sigma A 4:35 43 Sigma Chi A vs. Delta Upsilon A 5:15 40 Theta Chi A vs. Beta Theta Pi A 5:15 43 Chi Psi A vs. Westmin ster A Handball 4:00 Sigma Nu vs. Phi Sigma Kappa Some close and some wide was the order for intramurals in the P. In handball for the day, Omega Hall won a 2-1 victory over Pi Kappa Alpha tb move up the elimination ladder one step. The overtime contest of the day featured Sigma Alpha Epsilon ver sus Sherry Ross Hall in an A game. SAE finally got rolling after the final whistle and the count read 14 9 with Sherry Ross on the bottom when it was all over. On the other extreme, Theta CIVIL WAR (Continued from page jour) If, on the other hand, the Bea vers have any trouble combat ing the Oregon fast break, War ren will probably insert Keller and Lavey, the twb race-horse runners, into the game. Speculators are also pondering | what chances the Ducks will have l under the basket on offense. Here, the job will be heaped on Urban, Vranizan, and Streeter. Bob Ama cher may also see game time if the going under the hoops gets rough against the taller Farm team. Oregon is figured to Hse a straight man-to-man defense, Or possibly a shifting man-to-man if the OSC floor plays become too deadly. The opening tipoff for the game will be at 8 p.m. on the new Beaver court. Weather conditions permitting, a capacity crowd of some 10,000 fans is expected. Reserve seat tickets were sold out Tuesday. Only a thousand general admission ducats remain and they will go on sale at the gates at 6:45 P.M. Friday. To enable as many fans as possible to see the game, three sections of bleachers from the old gym have been added on the sides of the huge plant. After breaking- even with Washington State in the initial conference series last week, the Beavers must win tonight to re main in a strong position for the successful defense of their north ern division championship. Ore gon likewise split with the Coug ars and wants to win Friday as desperately as the Orange. All of which adds up to the usual red hot battle when the arch rivals meet bn the maple boards. The Beavers should be in their best physical condition of the sea son with the squad at full strength. Coach Slats Gill will probably open with Bob Payne and Jim Padgett at forwards; Hay Snyder, center; and Dick Ballantyne and Bill Harper in the guard slots. Snyder moved into the starting pivot job this week be cause of his speed and aggressive ness. Jim Nau, 6 foot, 5 inch sopho more from Santa Ana, Cal., prob ably will see his first varsity action Friday. One of the top men on last year’s strong Rook club, Nau in jured his back early in the season and is just rounding into form. Chi romped to an easy field-day win over hapless Gamma Hall by a score of 40-S. Another run-away game saw Sigma Alpha Mu win from Sigma Hall by a 30-9 score. Jerry Ginz berg and Hal Light ran wild to con tribute the one-sided count for the Sammies. In other games of the day: Stan Ray Hall beat Pi Kappa Phi 23-8. Chi Psi defeated Hunter Hall 27 10 in a near-rout. Pi Kappa Alpha ran over Stitzer Hall to the tune of 27-6 to complete the annihilation of the hall teams in the day’s games.
