Of course there are always
some die-hards. Riis tells of
Buerger’s disease, character
ized by such loss of circula
tion in the hands and feet that
amputation is in rare cases
necessary. It occurs almost
entirely among smokers; if
they quit the symptoms usu
ally cease.
One Buerger’s sufferer
was told to choose between
quitting smoking or progres
sive amputation of his hands
or feet. A few years later one
of his doctors saw the patient
on the street, an armless and
legless beggar.
‘‘Hey doc,” he said, ‘‘be a
good scout and light a ciga
rette and stick it in my mouth
I for me, will ya?”

Westling to Lead
Road Conference

officer for the opening session of
the Roads and Streets Conference
at Oregon State College Feb. 23
to 24.
This year’s conference is de
signed to serve those who design,
build, and maintain roads and
streets. Practical information will
be exchanged in the discussions.

handed in his resignation.

Honorary to Sell
Fudge Wednesday
Phi Chi Theta, business women’s
honorary, will sell homemade
fudge to University students Wed
nesday in the main hall of the
Business Administration building.
The sale will be sponsored to
raise funds for the Women’s Busi
ness Conference Jan. 19.
Onthank to Attend
Personnel Meeting
Karl W. Onthank, director of
the University Graduate Place
ment Service, will attend a fed
eral personnel council meeting in
Portland Thursday.
All federal agencies in the Port
land area will be represented at
the meeting. Discussion will be
held on careers in public service.
Onthank will also meet with
employers and University alumni
to discuss Portland employment
possibilities for students and grad
uates.
SU Food Head Named
Ruth Coffey, former director of
the veterans dormitory cafeteria
at Oreon State College, has been
selected to head the food service
in the Erb Memorial Union,

Slates Dinner
Initiation dinner for new mem
bers of Delta Nu Alpha, national
transportation fraternity, will be

recently appointed chairman of
the committee on personnel ad
ministration of the Pacific North
west Library Association. The as
sociation is a regional chapter of
the national American Library
Association.
KOACj Broadcasts
Weekly Seminar
The first regular University
class to be on the radio will be
broadcast by station KOAC begin
ning this week.
The class is an undergraduate
seminar “Plato’s Republic,” phi
losophy 407, which is instructed by
Dr. Alburey Castell, head of the
philosophy department.
The class will be heard on the
station for 30 minutes each week
at a time to be decided upon later.
