Wiley Scores 18 Points As Ducks Lose to Idaho MOSCOW, Idaho, Jan. 6— (AP)—'The University of Idaho trimmed the University of Oregon 60 to 52 last night to sal vage one half of their Northern Division, Pacific Coast Confer ence basketball series. Idaho ran up a healthy margin in the second half and was content to protect it through the final minutes of the game without taking many chances. It was a direct reversal of the contest won last night by Ore gon 50 to 48. Idaho’s Vandals trailed badly in the opening stages tonight but closed the gap slowly until they led ol to oO at half time. In that half, Oregon’s great center, 6-foot, 8-inch Roger Wiley and Jack Rainey, 5-foot 11-inch Idaho forward, staged a markmanship duel that ended even with 15 points each. Wiley Sinks 18 Rainey splashed in seven one ■ttancf shots that put Idaho back in the game after Oregon led 14 to 6 ■at one point. Wiley connected on liook shots and tip-ins for his total. .Wiley made three points in the sec ond half for a total of 18 that led all scorers. The Vandals came out in the sec ond half a solid five-man unit and moved away gradually until the score was 46 to 36 midway in the period. Oregon lost its eye in the last half, and only one man, reserve for ward Paul Cooper, was able to hit ROGER WILEY for more than one field goal, Coop er slipped in two to cut down the 15 point lead held by the Idahoans with five minutes to play. Idaho Eases In Coach Chuck Finley's Idaho crew was satisfied to slow the play down as the finish neared, and Oregon's frantic effort to get back in the game fell short. Sullivan memorial tro phy as the outstanding U. S. ama teur for 1948. Norm Van Brocklin Intends To Turn Pro for '49 Season Oregon's 1949 gridiron stock went into another downward spiral last night when it was disclosed that its highly herald ed quarterback, Norman Van Brocklin, planned to forego an other season’s play in order to enter the pro ranks. Van Brocklin, whose right arm pitched the Webfoots to a co-Pacific Coast Conference championship and a trip to the Cotton Bowl, said he intends to graduate at the end of the Summer term instead of in the fall. Intends to Join Rams After that he would join the Los Angeles Rams in the National Lea gue. Drafting of the big quarter back, who rated many All-America raves this past season in which he completely dominated the confer ence’s passers, was announced only Tuesday by the Rams. The 22-year-old star qualified the NORM VAN BROCKLIN statement by saying that if he was unable to complete his college work during the Summer, he would do so during the Fall, at which time he would turn out for football again. It is to be recalled that during the past season a report circulated which had Van Brocklin turning professional in 1949. Change of Heart This he quickly denied, but ap parently he had another change of heart. The possible loss of the. 6 ft. 2 in. 190 pounder comes as a double blow to the Ducks, who Tuesday were in formed that End Dan Garza would be ineligible for the ’49 campaign. If this pair departs, a great passing combination known as “Van to Dan” will leave the collegiate fields simultaneously, leaving Coach Jim Aiken bare remnants around which to build his next ball club. Garza himself went professional minded when it was reported that he had been signed by the New York Yankees of the All-America Confer ence. A corrected fault is a profitable gain.
