omecoming of 1948 at Old UO
aintainsSome of Old Customs
-ucapuc
ts “New Look’’ theme—will main- 1
ain the time-honored customs of
he Oregon campus.
Traditions such as “Hello” walk,
■ooters lids, painting the “O,” the
ronfire, and many others are as
nuch a part of our Homecomings
is the signs, game, and dance.
Yet many old observances were
somewhere mislaid in years past.
Twenty years ago the Soup’
Strainer Race was an annual
event. The man sporting the most
flourishing mustache was honored
for his prowess during the entire
year.
No Taxis Now
“Taxi Service” is another van
ished custom. Students would
plaster pennant shaped stickers to
their windshields, and any alumni
could hail the automobile so des
ignated and be driven to his des
tination.
Past homecoming committees
i an into troubles occasionally. An
early Emerald spent three weeks
worth of editorials bitterly de
nouncing “cads and bounders” who
were sneakily getting an early
start with their mustaches.
Money Troubles
Financial problems especially
plagued the 1918 dance committee,
headed by Jack Dundore. A 1918
Emerald story reads:
“The armory was finally ob
tained for the dance by Jack Dun
dore, but only after an expenditure
of $125. The armory has been
leased by Gross’ orchestra, and
they refuse to sublet except on
their own terms.”
Homecoming itself originated in
1914 when the student body presi
dent wrote letters to about 200
alums inviting them “home” for a
football game.
Grid Guesses

fey 21, and Rutgers to upset Prince
ton fey 6.
A quick sweep through the
South: Duke to record a 14-point
win over Maryland, North Carolina
for a hard-fought 14 point win
over N.C. State, Georgia Tech to
post a 15-point win over Auburn,
Georgia to thump LSU by 14, Bay
lor to work hard for a 13-point
win over Texas Tech, TCU over
coming the College Station jinx to
paste Texas A & M by 13 points,
Iowa State to edge Colorado by 7,
Oklahoma to humble Kansas State
by 21, Wyoming to post a 13-point
win over Colorado A & M, Tulane
to edge Mississippi by l point, and
Utah to dump Denver by 14.
Cal Over Beavers
Back to the Pacific coast, at
Berkeley, California’s Golden
Bears will try for their first PCC
win when they meet Oregon State.
We’d like to see those ugly Bea
vers dump the Bears but the Or
ange line, while spirited, is green
and unrehearsed; California by 14.
UCLA should beat Stanford 14
points for the Bruin Homecoming
and the up and coming Washington
Huskies are our choice to take a
close 7-point win from WSC at
Pullman. Montana and Montana
State tangle at Butte, and on a
hunch, we’ll take Montana State
to upset by 6 points.
SPU entertains Oklahoma A &
M Saturday and although the Ag
gies are a 6-point favorite we’ll
still pick SFU to upset, by 6
points. St. Mary’s is due to take a
14-point licking from red hot Ne
vada . . . This is a 37-game mouth
ful so you can’t say we’re just pick
ing the eeasy ones. Nuff sed ’till
after the final whistle. We’ll make
a report Tuesday.
