c omecoming of 1948 at Old UO aintainsSome of Old Customs -ucapuc ts “New Look’’ theme—will main- 1 ain the time-honored customs of he Oregon campus. Traditions such as “Hello” walk, ■ooters lids, painting the “O,” the ronfire, and many others are as nuch a part of our Homecomings is the signs, game, and dance. Yet many old observances were somewhere mislaid in years past. Twenty years ago the Soup’ Strainer Race was an annual event. The man sporting the most flourishing mustache was honored for his prowess during the entire year. No Taxis Now “Taxi Service” is another van ished custom. Students would plaster pennant shaped stickers to their windshields, and any alumni could hail the automobile so des ignated and be driven to his des tination. Past homecoming committees i an into troubles occasionally. An early Emerald spent three weeks worth of editorials bitterly de nouncing “cads and bounders” who were sneakily getting an early start with their mustaches. Money Troubles Financial problems especially plagued the 1918 dance committee, headed by Jack Dundore. A 1918 Emerald story reads: “The armory was finally ob tained for the dance by Jack Dun dore, but only after an expenditure of $125. The armory has been leased by Gross’ orchestra, and they refuse to sublet except on their own terms.” Homecoming itself originated in 1914 when the student body presi dent wrote letters to about 200 alums inviting them “home” for a football game.
