Most Webfoots would answer Portland, K Falls, Pendleton, o' even LA—but not so freshman Arthur Choo. Ar thur has come all the way from Sing apore, Straits Settlements. There’s a story behin'l his being at Oregon. It involves three persons— Dr- Paul B. Means of the UO fa culty, Mr. Khoo Soo Chay, a New York merchant, and of course, Ar thur. Arthur met Dr. Means when the doctor was a Methodist mis sionary in Malaya. Through him Arthur became interested in a state side education, and more specific ally, the University of Oregon. But interest wasn’t enough. There were years of preparation at the An glo-Chinese school in Singapore. “We had students of all nation alities at the school.” reminisces At thur, “but the student body was I chiefly Chinese. ” Arthur was captain of the school swimming team, house captain, a warrant officer in the boy’s brigade, and a member of Sea-Rovers Other activities took in YMCA membership, Chinese swimming club, Straits Chinese-British Asso ciation, and Methodist Youth Fel lowship. After aquiring a Senior Cambridge Certificate—equivalent of our high school diploma—Arthur was ready for college. That’s where Mr. Khoo Soo Chay comes in. Mr. Chay is paying all of Arthur’s expenses at Oregon, and the third member of the triangle, Dr. Means is acquainting him with the UO campus. As to the latter, Arthur is a bit a mazed. “It would take a long time to explain .my surprise at the trust Campbell Club French Hall ... McCheaney . Sederstrom . ...Susan Campbell .University House .Zeta Hall .Gerlinger Hall people here place in each other. Back in Singapore things are much more - reserved and formal. With a chuckle he comments on • boy-girl relations. “No one at home would dream of holding hands right on the street. Boys and girls seem' to take each other much less serious-_ ly here.” He is also fascinated by the large number of slot machines at Eugene—nothing like that back in Singapore, either. Right now Arthur is concentrate ing on his studies. He finds German and physics particularly interesting.' Since his major will be civil en-_ gineerng, he will spend from five to eight years in this country, return ing to Singapore to enter his voca tion. Naturally, he’s a little homesick. _ “I missed home quite a lot when I first came, but when classes started I didn’t have any time to be home- - sick.” Arthur came to ti e States on the China Mail. “The sea was practic-* ally a sheet of glass on the way over, so I wasn’t seasick. When we put. out from Sakhalin, north of Japan, I had my first experience of cold. I expect fore of the same this winter.”' Hate to write letters?
