Ducks' Spirits High As Aiken Orders Ruqqed Scrimmages The University of Oregon Ducks have only one more day of home scrimmage left before they depart for Ann Arbor, Michigan, Thursday morning, for their game with Michigan’s Rose Bowl champions Octo ber 2. After a slow victory over a spir ited Stanford university team, the Webfoots have worked hard this week so they won’t make the same mistakes again. Benny Ooster baan’s Wolverines are expected to provide the toughest opposition the Ducks have faced to date. Team spriit was high during yes terday’s three-hour scrimmage, as Coach Jim Aiken ran his boys through a complete offensive and defensive drill. The team received Frank Zazula’s Michigan-Michigan State scouting reports after the practice. Zazula, who does a daily double as head scout and backfield coach, reported that the Wolvertines have a strong team, regardless of the showing they made against their Spartain rivals. Squad at Full Strength The squad is in good physical condition, and will be at full strength for the Michigan game. Woodley Lewis, who was kept out during most of the Stanford game, will be ready to share the lefthalf spot with Johnny McKay. McKay, leading ground-gainer for the Ducks with 186 yards gained in 25 carries, is also leading Pacific Coast conference scorers with five touchdowns and 30 points. Webfoot Quarterback Norm Van Erocklin is in second spot in confer ence passing figures, with 12 com pletions in 23 attempts for 139 yard's. The Ducks leave Eugene airport at 7 a.m. Thursday, and are sched uled to arrive that evening. Wolverine Coach Benny Ooster baan has a veteran lineup that boasts experience, speed, and pow er in every position. Elliott Ranks High In quarterback Pete Elliott, they show-case a brilliant back in all respects. Elliott is rated as good as Howard Yerges, who handled the position a year back in an out standing way. Also rated last year’s par is Dick Kempthorn, a bruising fullback, who, like Elliott, played on Michigan’s defensive unit. Most of the defensive line re turned, boosting the starting aver age up 10 pounds over the cham pionship team. Oosterbaan, who replaced Fritz Crisler as head coach last year af ter Chrisler won the champship, has spent most of his athletic ca reer at Michigan. He was an All American end there in 1920, ’26 and ’27 under the late Fielding H. Yost, and has been at Ann Arbor since | then as an assistant coach. He plans to follow Crisler’s system as much as possible. Edged Troy 49-0 Last year, the Wolverines rolled through nine games during the regular season without a setback, and then topped that off with a •19-0 trouncing of USC, the best in the PCC. Only two games were close, a narrow 13-6 victory over Minneso ta, and an equally close 14-7 deci sion over Illinois. They scored a to tal of 394 points to f>3 for the op position. with only two teams scor ing more than once against them.
