H.S. Gals to Get Special Preview Of UO PiggirT Giving the high school senior girls a chance to see the University and its piggers is the purpose of the annual AWS Nickel Hop, planned for Friday from 9 p.m. to midnight. About 200 girls will be guests of the women’s living organ izations for the weekend. The men’s living organizations are urged to participate in the dance 100 per cent, according to Co-chairmen Joan O’Neill and Sal ly Mueller. All awards will be made on a percentage basis, Marjorie Petersen, prize chairman, emphasized. A nickel will be col lected from the fellows every 15 minutes. And Dentyne Chewing Gum not only tastes swell —it helps keep teeth white, too!** Dentyne Gum—Made Only by Adams' y Many Oregon Traditions Stem From Junior Week-end Festival By LOU WESTON Spring at Oregon is personified not by sunshine and the proverbial budding trees and flowers, but by the approach of Junior Weekend, complete with traditions and bles sed release for those on freshman privileges. Dating from 1890 when the Junior class set aside a day in May for the presentation of a, progranji of orations and music, the Weekend has evolved as each year’s committee has worked to make their program more out standing than that of the pre vious year. To add class emphasis to the day, junior women conceived a flag of the class colors and flew it from the roof of Deady hall. Soph omores, with a superb display of class spirit dragged it down and a battle-royal ensued between mem bers of the two classes. The dig nity of Junior Day was shattered. War tactics became increasingly complex and destructive until the class of 1906 decided to leave a more lasting memoir and spent their day cleaning and beautifying the campus. One of their first pro jects was the building of the “O” of Skinner’s Butte. Since then freshmen have been “encouraged” to brighten its lemon coat of paint each year. Oregon women, not to be out done, served luncheon to compen sate their hard-working classmen and later suggested a canoe fete to make the day more festive. Another day was set aside in i 1908 for athletic events and the Junior F?rom; the celebration of ficially became Junior Weekend and a queen was elected to rule her campus subjects during the gala events. As Junior Weekend has evolved over this period of 58 years, a trace of each stage of its develop ment has been embodied in the events and traditions which are observecf. They have been modi fied, rearranged among classes, and changed as the campus person ality is changing, but always pre served in the spirit that is Oregon. Short Signs Requested For AWS Weekend All women’s living organizations are requested to have AWS Week end welcome signs up before noon Friday. Simple, shortly worded signs are appropriate.
