HEADLINES
BRUSSELS, March 4—Fog in
the North sea area has delayed
the second session of the five
nation western European confer
ence despite the record speed
with which Britain and France
have prepared their answers to
original proposals, it was dis
closed today.
A conference announcement
said today’s scheduled meeting
has been postponed until 10 a.m.
(5 a.m. EST) tomorrow because
representatives of Britain and
France, on their way to Brussels
with instriiptions from their
governments, have been held up
in the North sea area by heavy
fog.
The original proposals were
submitted yesterday by the Ben
elux (Belgium-Netherlands-Lux
embourg) countries. It was re
ported they called for a broad
five-nation pact, including mili
tary clauses, to halt the west
ward march of’communism.
WASHINGTON, Mar. 5—House
Republicans teamed' up with south
ern Democrates to eliminate an
anti-racial-discrimination clause
from a government money bill for
fiscal 1949.
The latest round in the civil
rights battle was fought in the
house appropriations committee,
which pruned $30,119,379 from
President Truman’s request for
funds to run the labor department
and federal security agency in the
next fiscal year.
SAN FRANCISCO, March 5—
A five-pound, two-ounce boy to
day became the first baby to be
born on the busy San Francisco
Oakland bay- bridge.
The baby was born in an an
cient automobile in which Mrs.
Helen Bensen, 17, of Vallejo, had
been riding on a hastry trip to
the hospital.
Highway patrol officers heard
Mrs. Benson”s cries for help as
the vehicle pulled up to the toll
plaza. They provided an escort
in an effort to get the woman to
the hospital, but the baby was
born during the dash across the
bridge to St. Francis hospital.
WASHINGTON, March 5—Sen
Robert A. Taft, R., O., today came
out against a proposal to set up a
veto-less ‘‘supreme council” out
side the United Nations to meet ag
gression with armed force.
Taft’s opposition, together with
that of Senate President Arthur H.
Vandenberg, appeared to doom the
proposal. It was put forth by GOP
“revisionists” as an amendment to
the European recovery plan.
