These Ducks Share Dick Wilkins Husky Jack Nichols to Strut Stuff With Wiley in 'Big Men' Clash u UU51115 *- * t- -* Jack Nichols, regular center on Washington’s basketball squad, is a man to bo reckoned with in con ference play this season. A unani mous Ail-Coast selection last year, the 6-foot 6-inch Nichols figures to be the spearhead of the Husky offense again this year. Big Jack broke the University of Washington scoring record last winter by racking up 204 points, acid was topped in the Northern Di vision scoring race only by Oregon State's Red Rocha, who notched 215 tallies. When Washington invades Mc Arthur court this Friday and Sat urday, Nichols will be lifting the lid on his fifth year of varsity bas ketball. Jack was an All-Northern Hi vision center as a freshman on the 1944 Husky team which won the Northern Division title, then played in 1945 and 1946 at the Uni versity of Southern California, be ing named to the All-Southern Di vision team both years. Nichols led ttie high-scoring Husky cagers in their pre-confer ence games and appears a cinch to JACK NICHOLS equal or even better his past per formances this season. Tomorrow night, when you see a G'^-foot, 225 poundcr in Washington gym togs moving with speed and alacrity in spite of his size that’s Jack Nich ols. Workers to Report Today • At athletes on the work pro ject must report to McArthur court sometime today. 0V££ \ ICE CREAM 1 " \ Webfoots Finish UW Scrimmage By DON FAIR Oregon's basketball team held its final scrimmage session yes terday prior to the two-game series with Washington Friday and Saturday at McArthur court. John Warren had all of his men in action during the practice as the squad worked on the fast break and defensive tactics to cope with the high-geared Husky quintet The Washington team, coached by Art McLarney, a newcomer to Northern Division warfare, will, arrive in Eugene today and try out on the court this evening at 7:30-. Warren announced that the Web foots will hold only light work outs this afternoon in preparation for the games. Fie released no starting lineup for the games, while the Huskies’ 14-man travel ing squad had not been named. Warren Banks on Eight In yesterday’s scrimmage, War ren used nearly every possible combination with the candidates bat indicated that he would rely heavily on eight men—Marv Rass mussen, Jim Bartelt, Dick Wilkins, Roger Wiley ,Stan Williamson, A1 Popick, Reedy Berg, and Bob Lavey. Throughout tiie lengthy drill, Wiley continued to show his early season promise with several tip ins and general rugged defensive play under the backboards. Bar telt had his one-hand pushers working to perfection, connecting tor several baskets. Wilkins, who will probably see ulenty of action against Washing ton, has no game experience this reason, but his play this week in dicated that he was ready for the opener. i nis, uocchi Shine Of the substitutes, Dick Unis, rapidly developing into another of! the noted Oregon speed-to-burn j guards, caged several shots and turned in a good all-around floor game. Jim Bocchi, overcoming the effects of an injured leg, showed some of his noted ability when working with Unis at the guard post. Going into tomorrow night’s game, the Washington and Oregon i squads are evenly matched as far as preseason records are con cerned. The Webfoots have won 10 of 13 contests, while the Seattle quint has a record of 9 victories in 12 starts. The Huskies went through their i 10:30 P.M., MON. thru SAT. Presented by Chesterfields KORE 1450 ON YOUR DIAL j iVorlJ s Greatest Regional Network Forward Posts Jim Bartelt first five games without a set back before Minnesota topped them 47-37. Other defeats suffered by Washington were from Purdue and Ohio State, two other Big Nine teams. Included in the Husky victory string is a stunning 112-37 wal loping of the Sand Point Naval Air Station. In the first five con tests, Washington never scored less than 61 points and aside from the Minnesota defeat, the McLarney men have never been held below 5(^ markers. Washington polished off their pre-conference slate last weekend by dumping California twice, 54 51 and 59-42. Led by 6 foot 5 inch center Jack Nichols, the Huskies boast an all-lettermen first and second string team. f Other Husky Performers Other almost certain starters for the Seattlemen are guards Bobby Jorgenson and Bill Taylor, and forward Sammy White. These men are rated fancy-dans on the bas ketball court with a consistent knack of making points . From advance notices both teams feature the fast break. This style of ball promises to provide plenty of points before the series is completed. The contemplated battle between pivot performers Wiley apd Nich ols may well be the deciding fac tor in these games. The Oregon center, who has a height advan tage over Nichols, can bank little on this as Nichols is reputed as one of the stoutest rebound men on the Coast this year. Both men are capable of scoring points and each has averaged better than 12 points per game. Veterans' Wives to Get W.U.
