Division Cage Opener Looms Duck Team Readies for Husky Five The Oregon basketball team, in its last week of practice before the Northern Division opener with Washington Friday and Saturday in the Igloo, held a lengthy scrim mage with the Frosh cagers yester day. John Warren’s Ducks, by posting four victories in six games over the holidays, now boast a season’s records of 10 wins and three de ' feats. Going into the tilts with the Huskies, Oregon will be at full strength for the first time with the j declared eligibility of forward Dick Wilkins. In yesterday’s scrimmage, War ren alternated seven men on a ten tative first string—guards Stan Williamson, A1 Pbpick, and Reedy Berg, center Roger Wiley; and for wards Jim Bartelt, Marv Rasmus sen, and Wilkins. Alternates are Bob Amacher, Archie Gacek, Bob Lavey, Kenny Seeborg, Bob Don, Lynn Hamilton, Dick Unis, Roger Mockford, Bill Green, Paul Cooper, and Jim Bocchi. Duc.Us Go on lload For the Webfoots, the two week end games will be their final home games until February 13 when Ida ho journeys to Eugene. During that time, Oregon will go on the road for seven games against Oregon State, Washington, WSC, and the Vandals. The Huskies, with an all-letter m.an team returning, are rated by some experts as the tops on the Coast this season. The Oregon quint may have a slight advantage over the Washington team, as the Pucks will be playing on the home court. Wiley Shines Wiley, performing in his best manner since freshman days, has been the spark of the squad in re cent games. He was declared to be one of the best centers to perform in Madison Square Garden this sea son, when Oregon dropped a close 40-47 decision to Long Iesland. Against Kansas, Wiley was high j man for the two-game stand with IlH points. Ho has been developing a deadly southpaw hook shot, and can also make this one with his right hand. His biggest improve ment lias been on backboard play w here he has been snagging and tipping in rebounds. Bartelt Hits Long Shots A one-hand ace, Bartelt is sec ond in team scoring with the ma jority of his points coming on long heaves from the side and behind j the key. At the other forward. Marv Rasmussen's knee has healed: enough so that the ex-Franklinite i - showing flashes of. his pre-in- j jury days. With Wilkins as another: standby, the Oregon team appears to be better set at the forward posts since the season opened. Wiry A! Popiek, best defensive man of the Webfoots, has been playing a consistent brand of court j play and reached his peak Satur day against San Francisco with 12: points as the Ducks captured a 4S--H> triumph. His running mate ;(■' guard Stan Williamson, while not making as many points as last season, has been more of a key man iu setting up the Oregon offense. The South Dakota lad (Please turn re pave five) Webfoof Ball-Hawks _ Oregon Scoring Totals While final workouts are going on in preparation for the Northern Division opener Friday night, official scoring figures reveal 6-foot 8-inch Roger Wiley as the leading pointmaker of the Ducks with 162 points. Twenty points behind Wiley is foroward Jim Bartelt. The Ducks, as a team averaged better than 60 points per game over the 13-game non-conference schedule, overshadowing their opponents 46 point av erage. On the fol lowing day,they square off with The Dalles and Washington high in a double header slated for 2 p.m. The Frosh roster was cut from .50 to approximately 20 members before the end of last term, and al most everyone on the greatly-re duced squad saw action in a lengthy scrimmage against the varsity Tuesday afternoon. With three games scheduled within a pe riod of two days at the end of this week, Heldt took no chances on his charges being stale after a pro longed lay-off. He virtually emp tied the bench during the hour battle. Starting Five Named The starting five consisted of Rod Slade, center; Will Urban and Ernie Wilde, forwards; and Don Peterson and Jack Keller at guards. Alternating at the various positions were Wayne Ford, Bob Taggesell, Brad Fullerton, Malcolm Bolen, LeRoy Coleman, Eddie Artzt, Gene Miner, Jerry Barde, Bill Lebenzon, and Dick Mase. Ur ban dunked in 8 field goals and four free-throws for a total of 20 points, followed by Wilde with 10. The complete schedule reveals that the yearlings will play 11 games on their home floor and nine contests on the road. The tradition al four-game series with the OSC Rooks will begin in Eugene Janu ary 16. j This month's slate includes games on successive weekends with Benson, Washington, The Dalles, The Rooks, Klamath Falls, Grants Pass, and Oregon City. Hollingbery Says Odell Husky Coach (UP)—Orin (Babe) Holling bery, former Washington State coach, predicted today that Howie Odell of Yale would be signed as Ihe next football coach at Univer sity of Washington Hollingbery told the Touchdown club in San Francisco that he him self was “not under consideration” for the job vacated by the resig nation of Ralph (Pest) Welch, but that he belived Odell had agreed informally to accept the post.
