Delts Down Theta Chis; Win IM Softball Title Ed Sanford Hurls No-H it Ball Game; Winners Take, Hold Early Contest Lead With Ed Sanford hurling no-hit ball. Delta Tau Delta captured the IM softball championship, wallop ing Theta Chi 10-1 yesterday. The Delts were keyed up to a fighting pitch for the tilt, and start ing with two runs in the first frame, were never headed. The loser’s lone run came in the sixth inning and was unearned as Sanford whiffed 14 in the seven-inning contest. In the top of the first, the win ners took advantage of Theta Chi Hurler Paul Sower's wildness, scor ing twice on two walks, a wild pitch, and Bob Kehrli’s ground double to centerfield. In the second frame, the Delts really salted the game away with five more runs. Paul Pierson started the outburst with a walk, Jim Dunlap followed with a short single to left. Sowers retired the next two batters, but George Redden reached base on an -^gfrror, and when Sanford followed with a two-bagger, three runs scored. Next hitter, Zeb Czaikoski, then supplied the power blow of the game with a long high-fly homer far over the left fielder’s head. The Delts added a single tally in the fifth, sixth, and last innings to chalk up their count. Theta Chi’s lone run came as Bill Hutchinson reached first on an er ror, stole second and third, and came home on an overthrow. Otherwise only three other Theta Chi hitters reached base. Kehrli led the Delts with two dou bles as they put together seven hits and six Theta Chi miscues for the win. Frazier Names 1947-48 Staff Bill Yates, sophomore in journ alism, was named managing edi tor of next year's Emerald, last night by Bob Frazier, new editor, who announced staff appointments at the Emerald banquet in the Eu gene hotel. June Goetze and Roberta Bro phy, sophomores in journalism, will be news editors next year, while Jeanne Simmonds and Mary ann Thielen, juniors in journalism, were named associate editors. Walt McKinney, freshman in journalism, was appointed asso ciate editor in charge of produc tion. Helen Sherman and Phyllis Kohlmeier, both freshmen in journalism, will be assistant man aging editors. ISA Office Petitions Deadline Set for Noon All petitions for ISA party offices must be turned in to members- of the organization committee by noon today. Students to Make Up Composition Incompletes Students who have received in completes in English composition courses may make them up by calling at 12 Friendly to make the necessary arrangements, accord ing to John C. Sherwood, head of English composition department. Webfoot Team Tallies 3 Points The doubles combination of Jim Zeiger and Stan Anderson were the only Oregon netmen to win their way into today's Northern Division tennis finals. Zeiger and Anderson will meet Kieth Burrows and Wally Bostick of Washington at 10:15 a.m. First day results showed Wash ington leading with 10 points, fol lowed by Montana, 5; Oregon and Oregon State, 3; Washington State, 2; Idaho, 1. Washington made the strongest showing in singles play with three players, Jim Brink, Jack Lowe, and Wally Bostick winning thier way into singles semi-finals. Bev Gar ret of Montana rounds out the semi final field. Jim Brink won his way into the semi-finals without the loss of a game in two matches. In the first-round singles Ore gon’s Joe Rooney defeated John Bretz of Idaho 6-2, 6-2, Bob Carey downed Ed Bulla of Idaho 6-1, 6-1. Stan Anderson and Jim Zeiger drew first-round byes. Jim Zeiger pulled thriTligh with the Ducks' only second-round win by putting down Ceith Burrows of Washington, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4. In the second round Joe Rooney fell to the smooth-playing Jim Brink, 6-0, 6-0. Jack Lowe, also of Washington, dropped Bod Caiiey 6-1, 6-3. Wayne Carruthers of OSC emerged victorious over Stan An derson, 1-6, 6-1, 6-1. Jim Zeiger fell in the singles quar ter-finals to Bev Garret of Montana, 6-4, 6-4. 'Crystal Ball' to Roll Tonight As Turn-a-bout Becomes Legal By BETH BASLEK The smooth music of Art Hol man’s band will be wafted across gaily-decorated McArthur court at 9 p. m. tonight, when those tux edo-garbed musicians take their places to begin the traditional Mortar Board ball. For this evening it will be the girls who pay, and the men who wear the corsages. Highlighted by a giant crystal ball, the decorations will carry out the theme of the "Gypsies Crystal Ball.” During intermission, Kwama, sophomore women’s activity hon orary, will tap 30 freshmen for membership. Joan Williams, pres ident., will present three Kwama scholarships awarded on the basis of scholarship and need. Sale, at Door Tickets will be on sale at the door says Renee Cowell, ticket chairman. Price of admission is $1.80. Formal attire is designated by the committee, with dark suits acceptable dress for men. Girl Adds Realism To Omar Khayyam Assistant Professor John C. McCloskey, his thoughts on the past, was lecturing to his Eng lish lit class on the philosophy of Omar Khayyam. In the back of the room, someone probably brooding on the off-balance economy that will follow Mortar Board ball, was counting her change. Said McCloskey, “Eat, drink, and be melancholy, for tomor row we die. Take the cash and let the credit go.” From the back of the room, ; came the clink of falling coins. Oregon Stops OSC; Threatens Huskies A home run by "Johnny Kovenz in the 10th inning with one man on gave the University of Oregon baseball team a 9-7 victory over the Oregon State Beavers in Cor vallis yesterday. Blond Harry Walker, who re lieved Hal Saltzman in the second frame, was credited with the win. The win boosted Oregon’s rec ord to eight wins and seven loss es. A victory today will tie the Ducks with the Washington Husk ies for second-place honors. Both teams will play their final game this afternoon at 3 p. m. on Howe field.
