Officers to Hear WD Top Man Speak Friday Former commissioned -officers, who will receive degrees in June and are interested in applying for! a r egular army commission will be j addressed Friday, May 16, by a rep- j resentative of the war department, j Colonel J. E. McCammen, PMS&T [ of the University ROTC, announced yesterday. The meeting will be held in room 3, Fenton hall at 3 p.m. Among the issues discussed will be the oppor tunities now available for a com ‘ mission, the current ROTC pro gram and the opportunities that will be available to future gradu ates. This board will convene! in ROTC head quarters on May 26, 27 and 2S. 147 Graduates Eligible Advance information states that all former commissioned officers who will graduate by July 15, 1947 are immediately eligible to apply. Appointments will be made in the air corps, judge advocate general's department, medical corps, dental corps, veterinary corps and chap lains corps to those specially quali fied. Those who will not be over 28 years of age by July 15, 1947 and were commissioned in the AUS or any of its components subsequent to July 15, 1944 may apply for ap pointments in the coast artillery, cavalry, field artillery, infantry, corps of engineers, finance depart ment, ordnance department, quar termaster corps, transportation corps, signal corps, chemical corps, and corps of military police. Previous announcements stated that applications would be received until April 15, however, the latest information indicates that applica tions will be accepted until the screening board arrives. Anyone desiring additional in formation should contact .the Uni versity ROTC headquarters. Newburn for promoting the drive and making a success of the Student Union campaign on the campus. County Goal Set The Eugene-Lane county drive is officially opened. The goal is set at $200,000 by May 16. From there, a drive will be conducted in the Portland-Multnomah county area, and then will cover the entire na tion A total of $600,000 is hoped to be raised in this year’s campaigns to round out the funds for the Erb Memorial. Cards will be mailed to all stu dents who failed to subscribe the balance of their breakage fees at registration so they will be given another opportunity to do so. All students are urged to fill out the cards and make it 100 per cent on the campus of students turning over their breakage fees to the building fund. The houses who failed to turn in their donations for the drive are also urged to turn in the money as soon as possible to the educational activities office. The large majority of them objected- -asked for immediate freedom and inde pendence Russia stepped in, said the decision had been made by "democratic" countries at Moscow and that those Korean political par ties in the Russian zone who ob jected must not be democratic and consequently could not participate in discussions leading to the found ing of a provisional government. Since the Korean communist party was the only one to favor the Mos com plan, this amounted to the ne gating the voice of all other politi cal groups. The United ' ates would not accept this position-, causing the stalemate that lasted a year. In the meantime U.S.A.F.I.K. established a Korean Interim Leg islative assembly “in order to pre pare south Koreans for democratic self-government.” Financial Aid and r Provisions Commanding General John R. Hodge was in the United States re cently. He did not veil his purpose —that of securing financial aid and industrial provisions for southern Korea. The New York Times re marked on April 11, “All Koreans expect a gigantic pouring in of supplies from the United States. Many believe that in the face of the contemplated assistance from the United States the Soviet forces in north Korea will be unable to withstand the pressure with propa ganda alone.” Undoubtedly this is why the Soviet Union has made its new proposal.
