Dr. Henry Leach 'Compares Nations A comparison of American and Scandinavian democracy was the topic of the lecture by Dr. Henry Goddard Leach, president of the American - Scandinavian founda tion, Thursday night in Chapman hall. Dr. Leach's disoussion analyzed the qualities made famous by the French revolution: liberty, equali ty, and fraternity. America and Scandinavia practice fraternity to such a great extent, that it is al most a subconscious practice, said Dr. Leach. Russia uses equality in leveling to the lowest common denominator, he said, while the Scandinavian concept is to work up to the highest, drawing the «r lowest to the highest. America uses it as a medium of exalting the rank and file, he added. Russia’s liberty is done away with, as Russia believes there can’t be both liberty and equality, and chooses equality, asserted Dr. Leach. “America is not a geographic entity, but an idea,” he stated, adding that it was an idea of po litical economics and social free dom. American theories of democracy came from classics and British theories, but Scandinavian ideas of democracy are original, he said, and as a result, they are much more advanced as far as social security, labor problems, economic cooperation is concerned, and they have a deep-rooted philosophy. Dr. Leach’s speech was spon sored by the University lecture series. He was introduced by Dr. R. H. Ernst. Yale university has a private Jfi-ant of rare books dating back to 1538.
