Emerald Page 8 DAILY EMERALD Thursday, Feb. 13, 1947 Navy Deplores Budget Slash WASHINGTON, Feb. 12—(AP) The navy told congress Wednesday that even a $500,000,000 cut in ita new budget might “so greatly re duce the effectiveness of the navy as to render it practically immobile and impotent as an instrument of national policy. In a report requested by Chair man Chan Gurney (R., S.D.) of the senate armed services committee, the navy said it would have to take “drastic steps’’ to cut back its ac tive fleet if any large reduction is made in President Truman’s bud get. President Truman asked $11,200, 000,000 for the armed forces in his $37,500,000,000 budget. A senate house budgetary subcommittee ten tatively agreed to slice $1,750,000, 000 off army and navy funds in ap proving a $31,500,000,000 budget. Two Survive Crash MEDFORD, Feb. 12—(AP) — Two survivors of the coast guard airplane that crashed north of here were in a hospital Wednes day night. One man was badly burned but the second was un injured. Four members of the crew were burned in the wreck age. Bricker Mum on Plans TOLEDO, O., Feb. 12—(AP) Senator John W. They were members of a the atrical troupe advertised as the eight international nudes. They appear nightly, wearing nothing but provocative expressions, on the glacier-like stage of a music hall. “How do you think you would stand it?’’ demanded Patricia Morrissey, who like most of the eight international nudes is bare ly 20. “It gets so—so frightfully cold that we’re all in danger of being arrested. You see, the lord chancellor allows us to appear un clothed only if we remain per fectly motionless. Well, you can’t do that in this weather. The S. S. Harrington’s captain, G. K. Bell, said the ship owners cabled him to tell his crew that one coal cargo could not aid Eng land’s present emergency, and that the coal was needed in Singa pore for a British sljip planning to carry food to Britain. I. D. Mitchell, spokesman for the crew that struck yesterday, retorted that “we are doing the right thing.” He denied that the coal cargo would be used for ships carrying food from Singapore to England. “We take food to Singa pore,” he said. “The last load of food we took to Singapore stayed on the dock and rotted.” Truman Remains Firm On Lilienthal Choice WASHINGTON, Feb. 12—(AP) An administration source of high authority said Wednesday that President Truman has no idea of backing down on his nomination of David E. Lilienthal to be chair man of the atomic energy commis sion. Lilienthal conferred late today at the White House with Clark M. Clifford, special counsel to the president and one of the chief executive’s closest advisers. College English Prints Dr. McCloskey Article Professor J. C. McCloskey, of the English department published an article in the January “College English.” The article, a review of H. M. W. Tillyard’s “Shake speare’s History Plays,” was writ ten by Professor McCloskey at the invitation of the editor. Till yard is an authority in the field of Shakespeare criticism. A 24-year old naval reserve officer, wrote his parents that he and two com panions were ordered to Sugamo prison to make impressions for the Japanese war-time premier. Storms Pound Shipping SEATTLE, Feb. 12 —(AP) Win try storms have pounded Pacific shipping the past few days, dam aging two Japan-bound Seattle liberty ships and sinking three landing craft in the San Francisco bay area. Ii Boeing Plans Lab For Jet Research SEATTLE, Feb. 12— (AP) The Boeing Aircraft company an nounced Wednesday it would estab lish a new propulsion laboratory near Renton, Wash,, to study the high speed ram-jet engine and a Boeing engineer explained that the ram-jet eengine was nothing but a hollow tube shaped like a bottomless milk bottle. The project is part of Boeing's study of super-sonic speeds. At** Renton, a nearby electric plant will be used to compress air to the speeds needed in a “thermodynamic" wind tunnel.
