A WomatA Place Beauty on the Sp»t h'rom the.(University of British Columbia's “Ubyssey," the' Emerald has borrowed a popular feature. Beauty on the Spot. Reach week a campus beauty will he named in the column, and she will submit a double-spaced, typed article by the following Monday. The. subject range is unlimited—anything about which the coed wishes to write. Refuting that the women on the campus are beautiful but uumo, jean meiniieiu, awpuumuic in liberal arts; pleasantly agreed to write the featutre’s first item. ^ Offhand one would say that it is not of any nation-shaking impor tance if a mob jof malevolent beings in a certain souther* city, namely Atlanta, Georgia, or anywhere else for that matter, hire a,dingy hall and conducst a meeting punctuated by bawls of “We hate the Negro! We hate the Jew!’’ However, con tinuous Fascist demonstrations like this cannot be completely disre garded by the American public. Any people contains a small nu cleus of hate-mongers, whom we generally view as just sick individ uals to be watched by the proper authorities so that disturbances might be prevented or subdued. It is in this light that the majority of us regard an outfit like the recent ly organized Atlanta group, which calls itself the Columbians. With their colored shirts, shoulder patch es, and revered symbol, which inci dentally is identical to the one Rev lon displays on its Pink Lightning lipstick and fingernail polish, these racial fanatics plan not to control the world, but ultimately only the fcie national government. A few months ago they began the project of controlling Atlanta, by first dealing with the Negroes and Jews, using the methods of the Ku Klux Klan. When the state of Geor gia refused' recognition of the or ganization’s charter, it was imme diately proclaimed a political party. JEAN MEKRIFIEED Just how long this group, which employs strongarm methods, will continue to function, no one knows. Perhaps we should consider it no more serioussly than does the At lanta chief of police, who feels that this symbol worshipping mob can not attain any goal, since even the leaders lack all but literacy. Next week’s Beauty on the Spot will be Lois Hill. Her article, not more than 300 w'or'ds will be due Monday at the Emerald. Mr. and Mrs.- Larson are taking postgraduate courses at one of the oldest universities in Europe, the University of Uppsala. Aside from their classes, they are teaching English to a group of Swedish stu dents. \ isit to tjaierne One of the most beautiful spots visited by the Larsons was the province of Dalerne, where old cus toms and dress are being maintained for the benefit of tourists. It was in Dalerne that the American boys were interned during the war. Signe wrote that it was indeed a lovely place to have been interned, equipped with all modern conven iences. For 100 crowns, equivalent to $27.50 in U. S. currency, they rent a new and modern apartment in the suburbs of Uppsala. An added lux ury is a “bastu,” similar to a Turk ish bath, provided every Frida} night. No Fuel Signe said in a letter to her par ents, that there is plenty of every thing in Sweden but fuel. As then are no coal deposits in Sweden, th< only fuel is wood or coal importet from Germany. The supply of im ported coal from this source was of course, cut down during the war Copper, glassware, and a beau tiful and efficient Swedish fir place called a “keltslugn” ar among the souvenirs the Larsen are sending home. We may not disclose the writer s name, but he has announced that his system of finding' the contest winner will he unique and amazing. Opening the Pigger's guide arbitrarily and throw ing darts at the names of the coeds listed will constitute the queen. t' ill xiiiuuig me IIUIUIUWU Who is the “Unknown Sweet heart” of the campus? Before you shake your heads and turn to the sports page, leave us digress. For years on this celebrat ed campus there have been the pro verbial popularity contests, with various shapely girls eagerly vying for the title of Oregon’s Dream Girl, “Smiles a Million Girl,” “Fire side Sweetheart,” “Queen of the Campus Girl,” ad infinitum. All of the contest winners have been popular in campus activities, belonging to numerous committees, honoraries, and organizations. Their faces are familiar to most of the campus, and we always hear, “There goes so and so—she was just elected to the new “Oregon’s Lo tion Cream Girl,” and immediate ! ly she’s labeled as a big wheel on s the campus. It’s the same old story, l year after year, and the contests ■ are always run along the same rut. , Pick your activity girls (what is . meant by activity) of the living - organizations, and then stand be > hind them and push. What the Emerald is trying to do s to find somewhere on this cam 3us an average, intelligent and ca cable queen who doesn’t belong to anything. She isn’t interested in committees, doesn't belong to a string of honoraries, isn't a politi cal wheel, and to put it bluntly, is town here at Oregon to get an edu cation. Our unknown sweetheart is somewhere on this campus, and we’re going to find her. Movies to Include Walt Disney Film “South of the Border with Dis ney,” a 40 minute Walt Disney film, will be featured at 207 Chapman tonight at 7:30, Activities Manager Dick Williams said Tuesday. “The Tragedy of Mt. Everest” and “Himalayan Thrills,” both about mountain climbing, will also be shown. It is estimated that college en rollments may reach 2,000,000 by 1950.
