Rhodes Scholarships Available Again American Students May Go to Oxford War service scholarships as well as the regular awards will be given this year under the Rhodes schol arship fund to be awarded for the first time since the beginning of the war. Endowed by the will of Cecil John Rhodes, 32 scholarships to the University of Oxford are given to students from the United States each year. Since war service has prevented many candidates from applying, 16 additional scholarships will be given in 1946 and 1947. Both regular and war service ap pointments are for two years, with a possible third year for those whose record at Oxford and plan to study warrant it. 400 Pounds The scholarship is for 400 pounds a year, to which the student should expect to add 50 pound’s of his own, according to information from & the Rhodes trustees. A war service scholar who quali fies for benefits under the GI Bill of Rights may expect benefits at Oxford equivalent to those he would receive at an American uni versity. Applicants for the Rhodes schol arship should be unmarried male citizens of the United States be tween the ages of 19 and 25 on October 1, 1947, who have complet ed at least their sophomore year by the time of application. Citizens To be eligible for the war service scholarships a candidate must be a male citizen of the United' States between the ages of 19 and 32 on October 1, 1947, who has completed at least one year of war service as a member of the armed forces or a participant in civilian war work and who has finished one year of college or university work by the time of application. New Phi Theta Officers Elected Formal initiation of new mem bers of Phi Theta Upsilon, junior women’s honorary, was held Mon day afternoon at the Chi Omega house. Following the initiation the annual banquet for both old and new members took place at the Westgate antique shop. Election of new officers followed the banquet. Those named to of fice were; president, Barbara Full mer; vice-president, Barbara Bor revik; secretary, Margaret Met calf; treasurer, Pat Webber; cus todian, Gloria Grenfell. Marge Skordahl was in charge of initiation, assisted by Betty Householder and Marilyn Sage. Banquet arrangements were han dled by Virginia Scholl. Also honored at the banquet were the three Phi Theta scholarship winners: Della Martin, Beverly Jones, and Martha Mould. Marge Skordahl, outgoing presi dent, thanked the old members for their cooperation and assistance throughout the year and welcomed all new members into the honorary. Marilyn Sage then expressed the gratitude of the group for Miss Skordahl’s fine leadership during her term of olfice. Beverly Carroll, outgoing custodian, received spe cial consideration for the work that was done in keeping the Phi Theta scrapbook for the past year.
