OREGON GOLFERS _ (Continued from page nine) the-season’s play was number one man George Kikes followed by Bill Barash, Ralph Huestis, and Ossie Seida. The Webfoots improved slowly through the season’s play and were Jlfcexpected to show well in the divi sion tourney at their home course, the Eugene Country club. An off-day and bad weather con tributed to the Webfoot downfall, however, as they finished behind Washington, Oregon State, and Washington State. Division team honors went to the Washington four-man team as they bested the field by fourteen strokes. The tourney was in a sense merely a tuneup for the Huskies as they are entered in the National Colle giate golf championships sched uled for June 27-29 at the Spring dale Golf club, Princeton, New Jersey. Also entered in the National Collegiate tourney is Ken Roberts of Oregon State who copped medalist honors in the ND tourney. Roberts was four strokes behind Harold (Toss) Gjolme of Washing ton at the end of the morning round but rallied in the afternoon rain with a sizzling 68 to capture the individual title with a total of 142. And then came the opening meet of the Northern Division and the first loss for the Ducks, when they made the trip to Corvallis, and tangled with the strong Beaver aggregation. Losing by the scant score of three to four, the Ducks, undaunted, felt that they would triumph over the Staters in their next encounter on their own courts. In the meantime the Idaho Van dals and the Washington State Cougars invaded the Ducks’ courts and returned home soundly trounc ed. In the Idaho meet Washke’s racquetmen allowed the Vandals not one match. Totals. Idaho Bill Morley . Jack Ogsbury. Frank McGinnis Walt Kelm . Zeiger Number One The Ducks team ladder stand ings at this point of the season found Jim Zeiger playing number one, Stan Anderson number two, Hal Philan number three* Vince McBride number four, and Bob Carey the number five spot. Now for the return crucial match with Oregon State. The Duck net men did it. They defeated the Staters by the same score that the Beavers defeated them in Corval lis. The University of Washington was now the only team in the path of the title-bound Ducks. But the Huskies, coached by Jack Toreny, had always had a powerful team and so far in the season they hadn’t lost a match. Tourney’s netmen defeated the Beavers seven to noth ing in their encounter in Seattle. Bob Carey also defeated a man higher than he and earned the right to play the num ber four spot. Huskies Too Tough Enroute to Seattle the Web foots stopped over long enough in Salem for a return meet with Wil lamette. The Ducks had little op position from the Bearcats and de feated them seven matches to nothing. After a tiring road trip to Seat tle the Ducks faced the Huskies, and though losing the meet, they made the Huskies work very hard for their victory. Four of the sev en matches went three sets each before the Ducks were finally over come. Stan Anderson of the Ducks was the only Webfoot to turn in a win by defeating his man 6-4 and 6-3. The final tennis meet of the sea son was the Northern Division dou bles and singles elimination cham pionship match played at Pullman, Washington . The University of Washington Huskies won this match also but there was much earnest competi tion. Oregon’s Stan Anderson reached up to the semi-finals be fore being beaten by Righty Eden of the Huskies. In the doubles matches, Webfoots Zeiger and An derson gave Eden and Peterson a scare causing the Huskies to go four sets to defeat them. I'fext year will see all of the team back. Hal Philan has another year. Stan Anderson is a sopho more. Jim Zeiger is a senior but Ir will be back. Bob Carey and Vince McBride are both freshmen. Also, these veterans will have much com petition from the men who didn't quite make the upper half of the ten-man team, such as Dave Van Zandt, Ed Uglesich, Dave Delano, Jim Baird, Don Carney, Chuck Wilbur and Herbert Chin.
