Author Tells of yLost Men* At Matrix Table Meeting By Barbara Gilbert Discussing several of the many men and women who greatly in _^fluence the lives of the American people but who are seldom men tioned in history books, Stewart Holbrook, noted Oregon writer, spoke to guests of the annual mat rix Table banquet on “Lost Men of American History,” Wednesday evening at the Eugene hotel. Included in the “lost men,” which is the subject of Holbrook’s latest book, were Sam Adams, who ac tually made the ride for which Paul Revere is credited; Dorothea Dix, who fought for better care of the mentally ill in 1840; Ephrim Bull, who developed the Concord grape after 30 years of experimentation; Asher Benjamin, who was respon sible for the well-designed farm houses of New England; Frederick Tudor, Joseph Priestly, and Town shend Speakman, who, through their combined developments of the commercial ice cream business, carbolic acid gas, and soda pop, were responsible for the ice cream --•«oda.” Guests, Attendants Mrs. George Turnbull, faculty adviser to Theta Sigma Phi, spon sors of the banquet, introduced the speaker. New Officers Miss Ellsworth introduced new officers of the journalism honor ary who are: president, Marilyn Sage; vice-president, Virginia Har ris; secretary, Mary Ann Howard; treasurer, Winifred Romtvedt; keeper of the archives, Yvonne Zeek. June Goetze and Jeanne Sim monds were introduced as the out standing freshman and sophomore women in journalism. Soloist for the occasion was Lu cile Olson, contralto of the Univer sity school of music, who sang “When I Have Sung My Songs,” by Charles and “My Heart Is A Silent Violin,” by Fox. Emily Rhodes Parker played her accom paniment. BA School Slaughters Embryo Lawyers, 20-0 (The Emerald sports staff vouches for none of the facts in the following story. The Editors.) The BA school slaughtered the Law school last Saturday, 20 to 0, in the annual softball game be tween the two schools. Highlight of the affair was the crowning of “Queen Frankie I” and the umpiring of Dean Orlando Hollis and Professor O. K. Burrell. Board . 8:30 Church services . 11 Living organization dinners .. 1 Sunlight serenade . 3 Free Movie Series To Run Wednesday Of special interest to students of literature and Shakespeare, will be the English film “England’s Shakespeare,” to be featured at the Wednesday night movie series by the Educational Activities board. This picture is an effort to con trast what the commentary calls the peaceful humanistic age of Shakespeare with our own coldly mechanical era, in terms of typical travelogue shots of the Shake speare memorabilia at Stratford on-Avon. All of the buildings and monuments connected with the poet are shown, and there are also glimpses of the interior of the Me morial Theater and of the actors in costume for some of his famous plays. Two Japanese-American films will be shown,, entitled “Go For Broke” and “Challenge to Demo cracy.” Also included in the program is a March of Time edition on the “Nation’s Capitol.” There will be two continuous showings of these films in 207 Chapman hall Wednesday evening fro m7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Students, faculty members, and townspeople are invited to attend.
