U.S. Judaism to Flourish In Future, Says Feinsilver ..... ‘ Judaism will flourish for the next thousand years in Ameri ca” said Alexander Feinsilver, rabbi of the Temple B’nai Israel of Sacramento, California, in a talk given last night in Friendly hall. Rabbi Feinsilver told the gathering that, in his opinion, Judaism in Europe is through for the next thousand years. In 1933 there were 8,000,000 Jews in Europe; now there are 1,500,000 and most of these re maining Jews want to move out. The Sacramento rabbi reviewed the literary qualities of the Jewish book, the Talmud. The Talmud, he explained, is a commentary on the first five books of the Bible. Talmud Parts The Talmud, completed about 500 A.D., is divided into two main parts: the Mishna and the Gemara. The Mishna, he said, is a commen tary on the first five bocks of the Bible. The Gemara is a commen tary on the commentary of the Mishna. “The main purpose of the Tal mud,” the rabbi said, “is to explain the material in the Bible. For an example the Bible says that no one shall work on the sabbath, the Talmud explains exactly what constitutes work.” The Talmud, written for the Jews in Babylon, is divided into six sections. Each of these sections explains some aspect of the reli gion, Rabbi Feinsilver said. The theme of these sections are: seeds, which deals with agriculture; sea sons, which deals with the reli gious holidays; Women, tells the marriage and divorce laws and sets up the standard for the divi The place to meet your Friends while you enjoy the delicious Food of your choice. THE "SIDE" sion of property brought about by marriages and divorces; damages, which is the law codes of the Jews; sacred rites; and spiritual purifi cation. “An interesting fact about the Talmud,” the visiting rabbi said, “is that many stories such as Aesop’s fables originated in this book.” Rabbi Feinsilver concluded his lecture by answering questions and comments from the audience.
