Webfoots Upset by Beavers 55-51 League Lead Sliced to One Game; Wilkins High Scorer With 19 Points Oregon state’s towering center, Red Rocha, turned out to be 6 feet, 8 inches of high-powered trouble last Saturday, when the Webfoots succumbed to Oregon State, 55-51 in McArthur court. Both teams came out even on two-pointers, with 22 field goals apiece, and the Beavers’ margin of victory was their free throws. They made 11, against 7 for the Ducks. Rocha dunked in 18 of the Beav points with 7 field goals and 4 gift tosses, which wasn't quite high for the evening, but he also had a big hand in controlling the backboards for the Orange quint. The Ducks jumped off to a quick start on a basket by Jim Bartelt 15 seconds after the opening gun. Rocha immediately tied the score with his first tip-in, and Wilkins scored for Oregon with a free throw and a basket. Two more free throws by Bartelt gave the War renmen their longest lead of the game, 7-4 at the 16-minute mark. The lead changed back and forth ■far the next five minutes until Rocha put the Beavers ahead 17-16 with a free throw. From that point, Oregon never regained their lead as the Beavers built up a half time lead of 35-24. The second half was almost as completely dominated by the Ducks as the first was by OSC. Wilkins started off with two quick baskets to cut the Beaver lead to seven points. Rocha countered with four markers for the Beavers, and then it was Wilkins, Labhart for OSC, and Wilkins again. Oregon State had built their lead back up to 12 points when little Larry West hit one with eight minutes left in the game. Bob Hamilton laid one in for the Ducks to make it 41-51, then Wilkins put on a display of ball stealing, tak ing the ball out of the hands of the startled Beavers, and scoring four quick baskets in two minutes. Labhart put in a basket and a gift toss for OSC during Wilkins' scor ing splurge but the Ducks were only five points down, 49-54. With three minutes left, Wilkins went out on personals. Rocha fol lowed a minute later while the Ducks could only hit one more basket and OSC made a free throw. The game ended with Oregon -fighting desperately for the ball under their own basket, but the Beavers managed to tie the ball up until the final whistle. Wilkins was high point man for the game with counters, followed closely by Rocha of OSC, who had 18 points.
