Wolves, Wartime Marriages Discussed at Love Assembly Sex, moral delinquency, war marriages, religion and wolves were some of the problems discussed at the Love and Marriage assembly attended by over a hundred students in the music au ditorium Sunday afternoon. Charlotte Calder, sophomore in busi ness administration, was chairman at the meeting at which Dr. R. P. Huestis, professor of zoology; Dr. L. C. Bee, assistant pro fessor of sociology and Dr. Wesley G. Nicholson, of the First Congregational church were the principal speakers. Following a brief jam session by “Fathah” Owen Bailey and his crew of GI hepcats, the first item on the program was a discussion by Dr. Huestis on the biological aspects of marriage. The fact that the only reason there are sexes is that sex fosters variability was stressed. “A successful marriage is built on companionship and agreement, rather than on sex,” stated Dr. Bee. Sex was defined as the result of an adjustment, not a cause. The four types of war marriages were given by Dr. Bee as: 1. Long courtship which would have resulted in marriage despite the war. 2. Long courtship with sudden decision to marry as a result of the war. 8. Short courtship and the decis ion to marry as a result of the war. 4. Meet and marry in a three-day furlough. Dr. Bee presented the three most prominent problems to be faced in war marriages as emotional matur ity, the ability to restrain sex de sire until after the war and the >.—-1 She’ll really be your Val entine if you remember her with jewelry from JEWELRY STORE 630 Willamette possibility that the mate may re turn as a mental or physical cas ualty. The chance of divorce for a war marriage is 50-50 or more, and the real test will not come until about a year after the war, stated Dr. Bee. According to Dr. Bee a “wolf” is the term in college slang given to a man with the tendency to fixate emotions on a sexual level. To a “wolf” sex becomes an end. There are several reasons why men, especially men in the armed forces, become wolves, said Dr. Bee. The rise in prostitution is a direct cause; plus the fact that the men are not in their home communities, they are given contraceptives, they are trained to emotional tension, there is a lack of personal recogni tion and their culture has been hack ed away by war training. The girls sympathize because there is noth ing else to do. Several remedies were suggested by Dr. Bee; be a companion, face a conscious recognition of the prob lem .prepare yourself by acquiring a knowledge of social and biological courses, tolerence, abilities, develop a. personality of deep interests, gain mature interest and a cosmic view of men, have purpose and a sincerity of attitude. Cosmic man and the theory that religion gives meaning, depth, and unit to life was discussed by Dr. Nicholson. Whiting Appointment Gets Official Okay Alfred Whiting, formerly of the University of Chicago, has been of ficially appointed acting assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Oregon, Orlando J. Hollis, acting president of the Uni versity, announced Monday. Whit ing replaces Dr. H. G. Barnett who left the campus in December to be gin work with the Smithsonian In stitution in Washington, D. After leading- the game all the way | the G.I.’s suddenly realized that the boys from the Pine Tree division | had closed the gap in the score and at that point in the game held a 33 to 36 lead. Bob Nail immediately put the ASTU’s back into the ball game when he dropped in a cripple that knotted the score. A few seconds later Brandiger passed to Nail who put the Ducks into the lead with aonther neat cripple. In the last 17 seconds the Brandiger to Nail combination netted another bucket to give the Ducks the long end of the 42 to 38 count. Big Bill Moylan, who showed signs of regaining his shooting eye by dropping in 8 points, played an outstanding game and was contin ually breaking up the 81st Divis ion’s offense. Bob Nail, the team’s scoring for ward has a total of 72 points for the five games after adding 17 count ers in the Adair game. ASTU-TILLAMOOK Tillamook’s six-man squad made a valiant effort to stem the tide of the G.I. Webfoot offensive but the Army-Duck five finally won. Although the ASTU men won, they did not play their best brand of ball and had they been up against a more powerful team the score ingiht.. not., have., come., out., with ASTU on top.
