Their big chance comes when a murder occurs during a radio program they are attending. Finally they are forced to sur render to the police because they have won $10,000 on a wheel of fortune program, and must ap peal.- at the studio to claim the money. Theatre Offers Prizes for 'Miss United Nations’ Campus queens will have a chance to uphold their titles when a “Miss United Nations" is se lected for Eugene at the McDon ald theater tomorrow night. The title will be bestowed with due ceremony and honors upon the girl chosen as most representa tive of United States beauty. The contest is open to all girls, and is similar to many being con ducted in 16,000 theaters through out the country in celebration of United Nations week (January 14 to 201. Contestants will appear on the stage of the McDonald theater to • morrow night (Thursday) at 9 o’clock when the winner will be selected. Eugene’s Miss United Nations will be presented with a walnut plaque suitably engraved and a season’s pass to the theater. All girls interested in the con test should phone the McDonald theater for information imme diately. Top chumps of 11M2 or any other year are burlesqued in Hal Roach’s “The Devil With Hitler,” second hit now at the McDonald. 'Black Swan’ Stars T. Power In Thrilling Pirate Drama The seas blaze with action in one of Rafael Sabatini’s greatest novels, “The Black Swan," now playing at the McDonald theatre. Tyrone Power heads the cast as Captain Jamie Waring, a daring seaman who is commissioned by the king of England to round up one of the most dangerous pirates ’Mrs. Miniver’ Rates Tops With Nation’s Movie Critics New York, Jan. 13—“Mrs. Miniver,” MGM’s masterpiece or ic present war, was voted the top picture of 1942 by Amer ica's motion picture critics of 592 newspapers. The Jan Struth er story which starred Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon in the screen version, received 555 of the 592 votes cast for the to,; picture of 1942. The five best performances by male stars were given by Gary Cooper, Walter Pidgeon (for two films), Monty Woolley and Fred ric March. Outstanding actresses of the year were: Greer Carson, (P’raSi- turn to Pojic to sail the seas, Captain Leech (George Sanders). With piratical cunning learned from years on the Spanish main, Leech outfoxes Waring time and time again, and in the meantime continues to carry out his regu lar freebooting. Finally he achieves his greatest triumph by capturing Waring and his crew. Since Waring has also shang haied beautiful Margaret Denby (Maureen O'Hara), Leech’s tri umph is cf twice what it might have been. But the many years of piracy which Waring experienced before his reformation serve him well, and he manages to escape. Final ly he puts Leech’s ship out of ac tion, but the victory is short lived, for he comes face to face with* the master pirate himself. Their duel is the climax of a thousand thrilling scenes. Tyrone Power’s fans should put this film in their "must” list. Maureen O’Hara is as beautiful as ever, and an excellent support ing cast including Laird Cregar, Thomas Mitchell, George Sanders, Anthony Quinn, and George Zuc co add entertainment to the pic ture. eMotUfuMXxH deposUe/i production notes: Claudette Colbert will be starred in Para mount’s “So Proudly We Hail.” Ed Wynn, Xavier Cugat, and Gypsy Rose Lee added to United Artists “Stage Door Canteen.” George Raft completes “Back ground to Danger” for Warner’s. Pat O'Brien signed for “The Iron Major.” Paramount readies “Star Spangled Rhythm,” cast in cluding practically all its stars: Hope, Crosby, Lamour, MacMur ray, Tone, Milland, Goddard, Mar tin, Powell, Hutton, Bracken, Lake, Ladd, Rochester, Colonna, and many others. Rita Hayworth and Humphrey Bogart for Columbia’s “Our Friend Curly." Joan Fontaine and Orson Welles are working on “Jane Eyre” for 20th Century Fox. Well here they are—our ten best pictures of 1942. We don't expect you to agree with every choice we have made, but the rea sons are there, and you can judge for yourself whether or not they* are sufficient. Not necessarily’ listed in order of merit. Flying Tigers: Little Republic studios makes a sincere war pic ture which outshines the una bashed flag-waving of larger stu dios. Holiday Inn: Crosby and As taire combine talents to make what is by far the best musical of the year. The Magnificent Ambersons: Best dramatic picture of the year, this story of the fall of a wealthy family is notable for its effective direction by Orson Welles. Moscow Strikes Back: This Russian film was the most realis tic picture of the year. Although some of the scenes were unpleas ant, its striking realities mac*® America realize just what the Russians are going through. Mrs. Miniver: Nationally rec ognized as one of the best, if not the best, picture of the year. Pride of the Yankees: With Gary Cooper in the title role, and Teresa Wright playing opposite him, this biography of Lou Gehrig made one of the most moving films of the year. Road to Morocco: Top comedy of the year with laugh trio Cros by, Hope, Lamour. This Above All: Although adapted from a best seller, this film did not achieve great popu larity. It is notable, however, as the first film to deal entirely with the lives of human beings in the war. Talk of the Town: A George Stevens masterwork, with Je$% Arthur, Cary Grant, and Ronald Coleman. Jon Hall, Maria Montez, and Sabu (of “Arbaian Nights”) may do “White Savage” and “Cobra Woman” in Technicolor. Colum bia readies “Merry-Go-Round,” with Jean Arthur and Joel Mc Crea. Fox is filming “Stars and Stripes Forever,” the biography of John Philip Sousa. Columbia is now making “Destroyer,” with Edward G. Robinson in the title role. f m I_.l. Anchors Away!
