In the Editor's Mail To Mr. Lyle Nelson, Editor: No. 1 In far Sudan an ostrich stood, He faced a German drive, Beneath the sand he stuck his head, And then, of course—he died. A copperhead’s a charming chap In social ways and talk, But at his pacifistic pap I will simply balk If war, for him, stays “over there’’ And far, far from our shore, For us it’s waste to now prepare To fight a “foreign” war. Yet earth is quite a close knit ring Of nation, trade and creed; And war is not a “foreign” thing To any man or breed. “They” fight a war in little Greece, Food prices rise at home; So any war destroys true peace, No matter where you roam. In isolation hear, and hand, Exist in me apart, Yet, hand and I can neither stand Diseases of the heart. l Deny, deny, all that you will, And seek your peace alone, But keep in mind and heart and will— The ostrich fights alone. An humble contribution in dog gerel, representing a rather com mon viewpoint in America today. (Specifically to my friend, Ridge ly Cummings.) Sincerely, —Bruce B. Hammond. Shocking and horrifying audiences when it first appeared 10 years ago, many of the scenes are still as stirring as they were then. In reality only an excerpt of the original 10-reel film, “The Jazz Singer” is an unusual mix tui’e of silent film and dialogue. In this picture A1 Jolson sings for the first time his immortal “Mammy” the song which sound ed the death-knell of the silent film. Rounding out the last program, is the Mickey Mouse cartoon “Steamboat Willie” the first Dis ney cartoon to be publicly re leased. Still a little toughie, Mickey never said much but was perfectly eloquent. All the six programs presented during the last term, by the edu cational activities board, were part of a film collection gathered by the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
