Pacific Tests Duck Sluggers Today Webfoots Make Baseball Debut Coach Anse Cornell Names Pete Igoe As Mound Choice; Tremendous Oregon Hitting Power Set to Blast Pacific University of Oregon’s baseball sluggers will get their first taste of competition this afternoon at 3:30 at Howe field when they meet the touring Pacific university nine. Coach Anse Cornell announced yesterday that he would probably call, on Pete Igoe, two-year letter winner, to toss them up for the Webfoot aggregation. Igoe has shown well in practice sessions and is Gridders Practice Under the? careful eye of Oregon’s grid master, Coach Tex Oliver, the 1941 Duck bid for supremacy in coast confer ence football next fall is al ready beginning to claim a combination of speed and size as its greatest potential assets after four days of spring prac tice. ....Since the opening session last Friday, Coach Oliver has divided his squad into four working units, and concentrated on fundament als and the perfection of enough plays to enable the teams to stage their first scrimmage next Saturday afternoon. Oliver Drills Backs Coach Tex Oliver has taken over the vacated duties of Mike Mikulak, and has worked for the most part exclusively with the backfield, acquainting his galaxy of speedsters with the rhythm of a new starting signal and light blocking practice. Manny Vezie, end coach and newest addition to the Duck coaching staff, lias kept the end candidates busy with fun damentals and an introduction to a modified type of end play rather than the straight crash ing style featured by the Oli ver Twist.” Tackles, guards, and centers are the only ones who have seen much heavy work during the f;rst days of the spring session. Line Coach Vaughn Corley sent his charges through stiff workouts on line scrimmage Sunday morn ing and yesterday afternoon. Coach Oliver expressed satis faction with the progress his squad is making and commented favorably on the team morale. Coed Sports Start Soon “Houses should start their practices, baseball, tennis, and golf,” urged Hazel Oldfield, head of girls’ sports, at a special WAA meeting in Gerlinger. House sports managers are asked to report names of base ball players to D’Ann Shoemaker, Romance of the Season i “The Lady Eve” with Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda — plus — “FKght From Destiny” with Geraldine Fitzgerald and Thomas Mitchell I « apparently in better condition than any of the other twirlers. Calvert and Walker Billy Calvert may receive Igoe's speedball slants if he has fully recovered from the beaning re ceived last week in a practice game. If Calvert isn't in top shape, Bud Walker, reserve on last year’s squad, will get the assignment. The Webfoot lineup will not be lacking in hitting power. From the ton of the batting order to the last man, they represent power-plus. With Johnny Bubalo, Captain Dick Whitman, and Bill Carney handling the outfield assign ments, Cornell will not have any worries when fly balls are hit past the infield. Oregon Lineup The Oregon lineup will see Igoe pitching and either Calvert or Walker catching; Chuck Clifford, first base; Jack Shimshak, sec ond base; Bill Hamel, shortstop; Buck Berry, third base; Bubalo, right field; Whitman, center field; and Carney, left field. Later in the week Oregon travels to Forest Grove and meets Pacific on Friday, and takes on the strong Portland university nine at Portland on Saturday afternoon. I-M Swim Opens Four teams, Sigma Nil, Kappa Sigma, Theta Chi, and Alpha Tail Omega rested in the victors’ stalls last night at the conclu sion of the first day of intramu ral swimming. The Sigma Nil club dusted off the Chi Psi team, 25U to 211o, the Theta Chi men coasted through Omega hall via a de fault, Kappa Sigma left Sherry Ross hall in their wake, 37 to 10, and Alpha Tau Omega advanced on a bye. The first round of swimming will probably be finished Wed nesday, Elmer Olson announced last night. Times were comparatively high at the finals of the first day’s swimming and Olson said that no one approached record times. phone 1309, before April 2. Games will start April 7 on Gerlinger field. The first six men in the lowest qualifying scores will make up the varsity contingent to play against Pacific university at Laurelwcod golf course, Satur day.
